Sam at. .. Queen's Park Re: CHILD ABUSE CENTRE You may recall my men- . tioning in earlier columns thaï' Ontario is greatly concerned concerned about the increasing incidence of family violence in our society. While wife battering is a perennial concern, concern, abuse of children is a matter requiring immediate attention. In view of the current situation, the province is undertaking a new initiative aimed at further protecting our most precious resource, our children. To this end a provincial training and resource centre for child abuse prevention will open in November. To be located in Metro Toronto, the Ontario' Centre for the Prevention of Child Abuse as it will be called, called, will offer professionals of various disciplines from across, the opportunity to receive up-to-date training and exchange ideas and information information on ways to reduce the incidence of child abuse. The decision to establish this centre has been made after a great 1 deal of consideration consideration and much study including including professional input. The commitment is not a new one. In fact, the Ontario Ministry of Community & Social Services has been actively actively involved in dealing with child abuse since 1976, when the child abuse program was established. Two years later, a task force was appointed to examine a number of issues related to child abuse and the Garber Training Program was established to develop instructional instructional courses and resource material for children's aid societies, supervisors and foster parents. A child abuse register was also set up so that the names of those who ^jvere known child abusers could be recorded'for recorded'for future reference. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, the register has not proved to be as successful as planned because professionals professionals in the field have been loathe to report known child abusers for fear of repercussions. repercussions. Nevertheless, the child abuse register will be an integral integral part of the services available at the new centre which, as I said, will also coordinate coordinate and sponsor research into issues related to child abuse. The new centre is being established by the Ministry of Community & Social Services in co-operation with the Canadian Children's Foundation Foundation and will be a nonprofit nonprofit charitable corporation Operated by a volunteer board of directors. Child abuse is a universal concern shared not only by governments at all levels but children's aid societies, the public health authorities, the police and all .other thoughtful, intelligent and caring people. It is of paramount paramount importance because the stability and strength of this province, this country and indeed, our world, is dependent on the strength and stability of our children. ,In connection with this, the Standing Committee on Social Development of which I am a member has begun to meet until the legislature commences, to conclude its investigations in this area and I will be reporting about the workings of the Committee. Congratulations to Ed Kolodzie on his article in the Business Journal. Kathy and I were both very pleased that we attended the Oshawa Art Association annual annual festival. Will operate new committee system For th6 next school year, September 1983 to June 1984, the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education will operate under a new committee system. .The number of standing committees committees have been reduced from a traditional seven to three. The purpose of the move is to reduce the number of committee committee meetings. The move being taken by the Board of Education is similar ' to that taken by the Town of Newcastle a couple of years ago when the Town replaced most standing committees to a general purpose committee. Since that time the Town has operated under the single* committee system with the exception for a Hydro Lia- sion committee. The three new standing committees of the Board of • Education are; operations and finance, education, and personnel. The operations and finance committee will combine the former property and finance committee and the transportation committee. committee. The new education com- "tee will look after matters formerly dealt with by the curriculum committee. The personnel committee will replace the' former instructional instructional personnel and noh- teaching personnel committees. committees. «.Foiir other non-standing special committees remain in tact to be called when necessary. Romance (Continued from page 6) trap and wondered if Henry Peerie knew about this situation. situation. It was hard to think that Henry had set him up. "Although," he reminded himself, "he was the one who suggested I come out to Hampstead." "What's her name?" enquired enquired Mrs. Holmes. "1 beg your pardon?" said Crossley, who's mind had been wondering. "What's the name of your girlfriend?" He thought wildly for a moment and then remembering remembering the girl at the hotel he said, 'H'm - Millicent." Choosing a real person he reasoned would enable him to answer other questions without tripping himself up. ' It was Angelica's turn to jpin the inquisition, "Is she an American?" "English," he replied swallowing hard. "You're a fast worker," said Mrs. Holmes. "Only in the country a few days and you've got yourself a girlfriend." "I have been to England' twice before," he explained, getting a little tired of this line of questioning. "Can't be very nice for her, just seeing you once in a while," mumbled Mrs. Holmes. He declined to answer, but. asked if he might be excused and said that he'd like to take a bath and retire early. Angelica showed him to his room, that was nerve rack- ingly close to hers and then she took him to the bathroom where she insisted on running the bath water and left with some reluctance even when he started to unbutton his vest. He decided, sitting there in the tub, that he would leave after church in the morning. After all Sunday was not a day for going round asking people questions. He had been in his room about a half hour looking through some of his notes by the light of a small oil lamp - when a faint knock came at the door. "Are you still awake?" came the sweet faint voice of Angelica. (Continued next week) DOUBLE DUTY Use outdoor equipment to sleep more guests.
