A pleasant outing was held in the basement of the Orono United Church last Saturday afternoon in the form of a birthday party for Mrs. Kate Foster of Qshawa, a former principal of the Orono Public School, The event did in fact take the form of a reunion with former teachers and pupils being present. A light lunch was served. Pictured above are former teachers at the public school; Mrs. Bertha Touchburn, Orono; Mrs. Kate Foster; Oshawa, Mrs. Marjory Skinner Skinner (McDowell) of Mount Forest and Mrs. Marj. Here again we encountered many which we had seen at Presquile but added the Great Black Backed Gull and Little Gull. According to Jim Richard's book on birds in this area the Little Gull was first noted to nest in Ontario in the Whitby area in 1962 and is still somewhat of a raréty. The Gulls were not the only only finds for between Rutherford Rutherford and myself we identified a Ruddv Turnstone a most colourful shore bird even in its winter plumage and especially so when it flutters across the crests of the water. The bird is true to its name. Having a litti;e crook "upwards "upwards at the end of its somewhat beak it truns over little pebbles in search of food while most of the oher shorebirds are picking off the surface of muds flats or drilling drilling into the mud. How interesting nature can be and how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy it. Both shotguns, rifles and black powder took part in the competition for some turkeys and chickens. Gerry Duvall held the high score for shotgun until mid afternoon with 17 pellets in his card but this was equalled From around home by Roy Forrester It is some time since I have written about birding but then it is explainable as my interest rather dwindled somewhat due to the fact that new species were becoming difficult to find. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack in the forested areas north of the Village where already I had identified some 92 different breeds and overall a life-list of 116 species. Some three weeks ago this all changed when Bunting, Rutherford and myself left the forested area to take up a search at the lakefront and in lakefront marshes." Its an all- new world of birds and within three vists the total has now reached 129 different breeds. The first venture saw the three of us leave Orono at 6:00 a.m. Sunday to travel to Presguile Park where the Ministry had h arranged a shore-bird outing capably supported >,by a number of volunteers well versed in bird watching and with an abun dance of bird-habit knowledge. To say the least it was most enjoyable and Bunting Bunting was able to also add three new plant species to his slide collection which is always a bonus for Bill. So now we talk about not only Spotted Sandpipers but of Sanderlings, Double- Crested Cormorants, Do Witchers Witchers and Plovers. They are all there and always have been and I would hope will continue to be the case. We returned from the Presquile trip again full of vigor for birding and last Sunday visited the Lake On- .
