An innovative approach to on-the-job training has been announced by Hon. Bette Stephenson, Minister of Colleges Colleges & Universities. The program program provides bonuses for employers who hire and train an unemployed or laid-off worker or who retrain a worker who is already employed. This is the first time that a bonus payment has been offered in a job retraining program. The Ontario Training In- . centive Program (OTIP) has two components. Under the long-term component, employers will receive $1000 for each year of a worker's training to a maximum of four years. They will also be paid a $1000 bonus to cover a 10-week familiarization period for new employees only. only. The long-term component applies to six occupations: draftsman/woman, systems analyst and programmer, chemical process operator, industrial electrician, instrument instrument repairman/woman and millwright. $6 million has been allocated for the first year of the long-term component component which runs until March 31, 1984. It is expected to generate 1,150 new training ' positions in the first year. The short-term component which runs until March 31, 1985 is expected to produce 8000 training positions in more than 300 occupations. $8 million has been committed committed for this purpose.
