This was a hard fought match with Omemee hemming hemming us in our zone from the opening face-off, to open the scoring at the 1:57 mark. Orono finally settled down and started fighting back with Scott McAllister getting a clear cut breakaway. Scott beat the Omemee goalie with a hard low shot to the glove side. Jeff Hartwig set Scott up for this one, after Kevin Roy dug the puck out 'of the corner. Omemee then answered with a screen shot which eluded eluded Shawn Hârdy in the Orono nets. This goal was short lived as Orono struçk back 23 seconds later when Kevin Roy banged in a rebound from Jeff Hartwig and Jason Major. Major. This evefted the count at 2 apiece at the end of the 1st period. The Fuelers finally took the lead when Jason Major broke up a play at the blue line,/ fed Ryan Rock the puck, who in turn put Kevin Roberts into the clear. Kevin slipped his own rebound behind the Omemee goalie. Not to be denied, Omemee fought back to tie the score at 3-3, end of the 2nd period. In the 3rd period Omemee got the go ahead goal after Shawn Hardy made two spectacular spectacular saves but was unable to handle the third rebound. ' This put the home team ahead 4-3 and appeared to bé the end of Orono. However, with only 1:07 remaining, Jason Brachvogel received a pass from Jason Major and Craig Nemis broke clear of the defence to score a snectacualr goal. This tied the match at 4 apiece. * With only seconds left J.B. again broke into the open, this, time his attempt was thwarted by a sprawling Omemee goaler. , This game was a real dog fight from start to finish. A hard earned point for both squads. ' Dustin Reid missed the game due to a foot operation and was sorely missed. Cameron Esler and Jim Partner played strong both ways, with Shawn Hardy coming up big when we needed needed him. 2ND GAME Just before head coach Russ Major left for his annual annual deer hunting trip he told the boys that he fully expected expected them to win both games over the weekend or he wc Idn't return. Russ was only joking of course but the kids took him serious enough to give him his wish by downing the Millbrook team (6-0) and (1-0 to .gain sole possession of 1st place. Dustin Reid opened the game when he stripped the Millbrook defenceman of the puck, broke clear and fired a lew rifle shot to the bottom left hand corner. Two minutes and fourteen seconds later 'kevin Roberts intercepted an errant pass at centre ice, turned on the jets, and unleashed a bullet drive cleanly beating the Millbrook netminder. Score 2-0 Orono. The Fuelers kept the pressure on going into the second second period controlling the puck for long periods at a time. Orono's third marker came when goalie Shawn Hardy cleared the puck to Jim Partner. Partner. Jim spotted' Jason Bra'chvogel breaking clear along the boards and fed him a perfect pass, JB made no mistakes on his breakaway when- he unleased a blistering shot i which handcuffed the Millbrook goalie. This ijut the home team up 3-0. The Fuelers then hit for 2 quick unanswered .goals to close out the period. The first .counter was Scott McAllister's breakaway goal set up neatly by Bradley Minnis. Minnis. , David Sheridan, after hitting hitting two goal posts earlier, finally banged in his second goal of the year after a mad scramble in front of Millbrook's goal. The third period was open$ ed up when' Ryan Rock put Kevi/i Roberts in all alone. Kevin connected his second tally of the match with a high shot to the corner. Shawn Hardy was severely tested in the closing minutes of the game and came up with three spectacular saves to earn himself his second shutout of the year. A lot of the credit for this win must go to the defensive corps of Brad Minnis, Jason Major, Jim Partner and Craig Nemis. They cleared the goal area time after time with crisp checking and good positional play. Jeff Hartwig, Brent Gates and Jeff Devolin were patrolling their wings with authority to help the cause. 3RD GAME On Sunday afternoon Orono returned to Millbrook for a rematch. Guided by assistant coaches Murray Minnis and Bob Sheridan, Orono squeaked out a 1-0 decision. This game proved to be the most exciting of the year as both goalies were almost unbeatable. This match started and ended in a blistering pace with Orono outshooting a . determined Millbrook squad. However, midway through the 1st period Brent Gates banged in Jason Brachvogel's rebound to score what proved proved to be the winner. The play started in the Orono end when Jason Major Major headmaned a perfect pass to JB who broke clear of the defence. Shawn Hardy earned his 3rd shutout in five games played. At one point early in the third . period the referees deemed it necessary to give the Fuelers two penalties at once. The Orono boys did an excellent excellent job of killing these penalties off; With only 2 minutes remaining remaining we were assigned still another minor and again Orono came up big defensively, defensively, with a lot of help from goalie Shawn Hardy.
