A Dutch custom IIIIS Mr. and Mrs. Krukkert of Orono recently celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary Anniversary in a distinctive and customary manner. The Krukkert's are originally from Holland and it is a Dutch custom to erect an obstacle such as that pictured above on the 25th Wedding Anniversary and as well on the anniversary ^designating 12*/2 years of marriage for Dutch couples. Mrs. Krukkert said most marriage customs in Holland are the same as Canadian marriage ^customs. Mrs. Krukkert said there is no such thing as "Dutch Treat" in Holland and has' no idea of where this custom originated but said it wasn't in Holland. Mr. and Mrs. Krukkert were hosts to six family guests from Holland and celebrated the event on Saturday, Saturday, November 12th, with a dinner and dance held at St. Francis of Assissi Church in Newcastle. SAM L. CUREATZ, M.P.P. Computers to be provided The Ministry of Education recently presented its annual report to the Ontario Legislature. The report details the many programs. and activities undertaken by the Ministry in the past year and focuses on several projects projects designed to improve the quality of education for ' all elementary and secondary school students in the; province. province. One major initiative is a $15 million program to provide provide Ontario schools with microcomputers and edüca- tional software. It is designed to give the province's 1.8 million students an introduction introduction to the world of high technology. The program is a joint venture venture of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In its first phase $10 million worth of educational computers will be purchased from a new Canadian firm which was formed specifically to service the educational market. In succeeding years, the province, province, will provide grants to school boards for the purchase purchase of microcomputers. In .addition, Ontario will make available up to $5 million for the development of Canadian-produced electronic electronic learning materials. Thé Ministry wants to stimulate the development of a Canadian Canadian based educational software software industry to meet its need for high quality classroom materials. The software stimulation program will increase increase to $10 million annually by 1986. Six pilot schools have been in operation for the past two years to demonstrate the effectiveness effectiveness of this technology and identify the needs of students and teachers in this regard. A program has also been initiated for the development of high quality exemplar lesson ware. As well as having the potential to improve education education across Ontario, the, microcomputer will enable students to leave school as well educated and productive , members of an increasingly complex information- oriented society. In years to come, the economies of Canada and Ontario will increasingly depend depend on trade and in order to be competitive, we must improve improve our productivity. A ABC Chapter seeks support The Northumberland and Newcastle chapter of the Association for Bright Children (ABC) is seeking support and involvement, from adults interested in the welfare of bright children. The association works to increase increase the understanding and acceptance of these children at school and in the community community and encourages educators to establish programs programs that will meet their needs. Contrary to popular belief bright children do not always find school the exciting exciting place it should be. In many cases they learn "how not to learn" or "turn off" i such an extent that they ^re identified as slow learners or behaviour problems. If you believe that bright children deserve, as do all children, the opportunity to be accepted for who they are and to learn as much as they can, please plan to attend the next meeting of the ABC. Fourteen projects were approved in Durham East and Oshawa creating a total of 130 jobs. The province's contribution was more than $500,000. She died, Wednesday, November 2, 1983 at the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital and is survived by two sisters, Elsie of Ottawa and Mary of Whitby, also a brother, the late Roland White.
