On the irait ëf Acid Gas by Arlin Hackman Federation of Ontario Naturalists f • (V ' , The search for solutions to modern environmental ills can lead scientists into some ,unlikely experiments and the acid rain problem has produced produced at least one prize- winning candidate. Somewhat akin to catching a greased pig, it involves tracking tracking an inert, colourless and apparently harmless gas wherever the wind blows it across eastern North America. Not a simple matter. matter. But already the results are helping to fit one of the remaining pieces into the acid rain puzzle. In recent weeks, samples of a rare perfluorocarbon gas have been launched into the ■ atmosphere at Dayton, Ohio and Sudbury, Ontario-. A huge network of ground- based monitoring stations along with a squadron of ' airplanes hâve followed in hot pursuit and mapped the Sharon Wood, Marie Kerr, Maureen Preston and Ann Dreslinski. gas plumes as they disappeared. disappeared. 1 The problem which promoted promoted this high-flying research is straightforward. While the effects of acid deposition on Ontario lakes have been demonstrated and recent * authoritive American studies showed a conclusive link between between sulphur dioxide emissions emissions and acid deposition, it's not so easy to tell whose smoking gun killed the fish in your favourite lake. And before industrialists or utility owners or state and provincial provincial governments can agree on how to apportion the costs of clean-up, they've got to have some hard evidence of who is at fault. Until now all we've had to rely, on is educated guess work. Well, according to the scientists involved, the gas charges were successfully tracked, showing that'those, released in Dayton stayed twice over Ontario, while the Sudbury emissions were swept over New York State and out to the Atlantic.. So it's now safe to say we've proven that the pollution ' causing acid rain is- blown over very long distances from the heart of offending industrial industrial areas onto sensitive wilderness areas. With modern computer programs we can now predict the routes to be taken by acid rain storm clouds .based on meteorological data. Scientists on both sides of . the 49th parallel have now provided an admirably clear picture , of the acid rain cycle for our part of the continent. It's high time for politicians ' to agree on a transboundary plan for sharing the clean-up. This will no doubt prove far ihore difficult than any scientific scientific research. So it's now up to us as citizens to start tailing tailing our elected representatives. representatives.
