The Apple Blossom Shop is to open on December 2nd. The General Purpose committee committee of the Town of Newcastle have supported a public works department report that consideration be given for a new sidewalk on the west side of Main Street in the business section of Orono. The report from the director director of public works resulted from a letter from the Orono Businessmens' Association asking that a new sidewalk be considered. Santa big attraction at Orono Showcase Santa was one of the main attractions at the Orono Showcase this weekend with over 100 children attending. Some with lists, chatted with St. Nick and had their picture taken. Santa and photographer, Brian Groot, were a great team and both kids and parents were happy with their visit and photo. Ted Woodyard has notified his 'fellow council members that he intends to present a Notice of Motion in which council council would be asked to defeat any proposal to apply apply a street lighting rate across the whole of tjie Town of Newcastlê. Last week cduncil proposed proposed that the Town apply 30 percent of all street lighting capital and operating costs to the general town assessment an4 that 70 percent of such costs be bofne under local improvement to those areas directly benefiting from'the street lights. Up until this time the total street lighting costs have' been borne under local improvement charges to the specific ar # eas in which the street lights exist. There has been no charge against the general rate. Woodyard states he cannot live with the new policy and states it is not fair to the taxpayers in the rural areas of the municipality. He points out that rural residents are in many cases paying the full cost of yard, gate and lane lights and these people should not be asked to help pay costs of street lighting in other areas. Woodyard also points out that rural residents now pay a cost higher than urban residents, for their hydro and should not be taxed further for street lighting, , Woodyard also points out that residents in the Orono Estates have paid the full cost of street light installation in the subdivision subdivision and now under the new policy are being asked to, subsidize other areas where this is not the case. New Armstrong IGA to Open November 30th The New Armstrong IGA food market in the north-east sector of Orono will officially open to the public on Wednesday, Wednesday, November 30th at. 10:00 p.tu. Work at the Orono plaza began earlier this year and is the first major development in the Orono commercial sector over a good number of years. The Armstrongs are to be'congratulated in their confidence confidence in the industry and the area.
