2-Oroito Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 30, 1983 tïF " PROGRESS INEVITABLE No matter what field one views, be it commercial or industrial, or other services from the private sector or I dven through thé public sector, th'e common denominator for success is directly related to progress. Stagnation leads only to elimination. It may be an old cliche but times do change and those who keep pace survive survive in this changing world. - At times it is hard to accept change for we do betiome comfortable and do become protective of that which we have to-day and rather fail to look to the future and the many unknowns that may or maynot exist. exist. : The opening of the new IGÂ store in Orono this week is a sign of progress but is also a sign of change with this family business leaving the downtown area. Surely it would have been most difficult or in all. likelyhood impossible to meet the terms of progress in downtown Orono. This is not condemning the downtown area but the physical factor for a successful operation in today's market in the downtown area would not, in the first place attract investment and would if such was undertaken be hampered by those physical restraints that do exist. We still beleiye that downtown Orono can prosper prosper using the new mall as a drawing card to the Orono area and as i well through determination and cooperation. cooperation. ' Orono .has much to offer, possibly more than most centres of its size. New ideas, promotion, neatness in the downtown area, friendliness, all go a long way. We would like to think that each can benefit from the other! and that a Shopper shopping in Orono either at the ndrth end or in mid-town is more advan- tgeous to the Whole Oronol business cdmmunity than one the shoppef that travels lafar. It is interesting to note the developments in the Town of Bowntanville where the downtown area and the Bowmanvillfc Mall in the east end of the town are battleing againstl the development of a major mall which proposes a majdr junior Department store and a major food chain store in the west end of the Town alongside 401 highway. T|o this point town council has put the brakes to such development of the west mall and one would have to'believe as a protection to the present downtown business area including Bowmanville Mall. It wasn't that many years ago that the Town council had reservations of the Bowmanville Mall proposal, proposal, again in protection of the downtown area. It took a municipal boa'd hearing before the mall was given the green light for c evelopment but on a restricted bases in three stages wlich it was considered would provide some protection to downtown business area. Those restrictions are now, in fact, plaguing the issue for if the Bowmanville Mall would have been allowed to proceed with its full proposal including a junior department store there would now be no market for the proposal in the west end of Bowmanville. Council Council smoothered progress and ip so doing at that point has likely created a greater problem for we do believe the market for a department stpre exists and it will proceed inspite of council. Progress is inevitable and we must face the challenge. Recording Artists Coming to Newcastle. Now is the time to treat your family to a wonderful pre- Christmas show. Tickets available at.the Clarke'Public Library. Letter to Editor Mr. Forrester; I may be dpeni'ng Pandora's Box by writing this letter but as a hockey mother, a figure skating mother, a soccer mother and a Beaver, Cub and Scout mother, I do a lot of standing at arenas, soccer soccer pitches and various other places. While standing arorînd you do have a ten- dancy to enter into conversation conversation with others, especially mothers. One thing that is talked about a great--deaf , is the arena and Orono Athletic Association. There are a number of questions that apparently have been asked of these gentlemen, but never a straight forward answer is given. I should like to know when these men will sit down and publically answer some of these questions. questions. For example - The banners that our children have taken great pride in winning. Why are they not hung so people can see them and have a little pride in the fact that their children have helped put them there? Where do they sit?- - why on top of the manager's filing cabinet and how long have they been there? - why 2 or 3 years. 1 have heard that IF they are hung they can only stay 1 season. Why? They do not hamper the dearrrngi they. adcT character to our arena and they show team-effort and sport. They also give the children a real boost to know that they earned them. It is an easy way to instill a little pride in a child for the arena and also for themselves. Banners Banners that are rolled up show nothing. I'd like to see them hung permanently. If it is too big of a job I'm sure there are several men who would undertake to put them up. Another question is why do we not have hockey tournaments tournaments here? It is said that it is too much work for the arena manager. It seems it is not too much trouble to hold an "Old Timers" Tournament. Tournament. As I understand it, these could bring in a considerable considerable dollar, not only to the arena but also into the town. I think that if the "Old Timers" can have them the "Young Ones" should be allowed to have the same privileges. But then again how many young ones sit on the Athletic? Another question - Whatever happened to the survey that was doné last year on the registration forms to have people specify their choice of town colours? From what I hear that survey has been pushed so far back into the cupboard that we will never know what colours were chosen. It is a real shame that people have to see children that look as if they have been dressed for games in the cast off's of what looks like the "Good Will". 1 must say that the only team that looks nice and from Orono are the "Tennant Fuel's" team. I understand that it costs a great deal to put together new uniforms but surely they could all be the same colour and look presentable. We want our town to mean something and say something, not "Newcastle, Timbuktu or whatever, but ORONO" , Find colours that can be used not only for hockey but soCcer and baseball to. I'm sure that people of this town would be glad to stand up and help if they knew that their children would benefit. Last but not least - Why are there no women sitting on the Orono Athletic Association? • The majority of work done ' for the fund-raising is- done 'by women of this town and area. Women are the ones that take their children to most games and listen to the pros and cons of these games, have to bake the pies for hot meals, do the door duty, and be the backbone.behind this arena. WE are your most valuable asset. When a member of the Athletic was approached about girls playing playing hockey on the hous,e league teams, it was taken as a joke. Girls in this community community are not given a fair deal. Is (.here any reason why a girls hockey, broomball, or ringet- tes team could not be formed to. give these girls something to do in the winter months. I realize the Figure Skating Club is available, but not all people can afford it, nor do a number of girls want to do it. It takes planning and a little effort on the manager's time as well as the Athletic's. I'm sure if you were to realize that there are two genders living living in this town,, time could be arranged for these girls. This is one fabulous town, there are so many activities 1 Tor kids but all are geared to the male side. Jt is time for a Kendal News Why need I sigh or strive for wealth? It is enough for me That heaven hath sent me strength and health, And a spirit glad and free; Grateful these blessings to receive, I sing my hymns at morn and eve. Sunday was a beautiful sunny day. It was the first Sunday of Advent. The period of waiting for the birth of our Lord. The scripture , reading was Isaah 2: 1-5 and Luke 1: 5-25. Francis Gay wrote the following - A friend of ours told us about going to church a few weeks before Christmas when the ceremony of lighting the Advent Candles was taking place. As a member of the congregation lit the candle a child's voice broke the silence singing "Happy Birthday to you!" Not surprisingly the congregation congregation laughed, yet what could be more appropriate? "out of the mouths * of change. The girls of today will be the workers of tomorrow tomorrow and the Orono Athletic is' biased and a little behind the times. When the Athletic Association has a change in directors I hope that some of the "OLD TIMERS" will give way and let new and ffesh blood into their midst. Be it women or not, a new outlook is needed and the old saying of "It's who you are and who you know" will be put as far back in the cupboard cupboard as the. town colour survey has been. I realize that I have stepped hard on some toes but it is time to come out of the closet with these questions. People do get fed up with being put off all the time and it is time that the people called the tune for once. After being slapped on the wrists once by the Athletic, twice should prove interesting. Yours truly, Mrs. Elaine Haines babes....". It isn't often that the people people of the Kendal area have- the opportunity of attending 1 two Golden Weddings on the same day. Last Saturday, November 26th, Stan and Thelma : Mercer of Campbellcroft invited invited their friends, relatives and neighbours to help them celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. This' writer attended McLean's School north of Kendal with Stan and his brother Arthur. Our Sunday School at Kendal today has several descendants of the Mercer clan, On November 26th Lavern and Zella Patterson invited their friends, relatives and neighbours to their 50th Wedding Anniversary in the Orono Oddfellows Hall. This was a gala event. The friends came from far and near. The Heather ladies ser- " vied a dainty lunch and each was given a piece of the Golden Wedding Cake. We all wish them many years of health and happiness. Zella made many friends as a nurse, Lavern made friends as a farmer and showman at the fairs. Over 220 signed the register. In 1938 the founder olf the Ford Motor Company and his wife cèlebrated their Golden Wedding. .Not surprisingly he was asked, "Whpt is the key to your successful, marriage?" Henry Ford's reply came with simple horitesty: "The formula formula is'-the same that I always , used in making cars - just stick to one model." > Hi5 Model T, produced to make possible cheap and reliable motoring for the millions,' sold over 15 million . vehicles' between 1908 and 1927 and in his marriage Henry Ford was also richly blessed. And who can say his formula formula doesn't .work? Copied - from the Friendship Book. If youare one of the beginning beginning farmers in the neighbourhood who has decided to raise a couple of pigs or a few goats or perhaps a few calves in an old barn, you will need a cat or two to keep the mice down. Feed it oatmeal porridge or cat food at the barn. A neighbour told us this stpry long ago. He was moving to a farm he had rented. The barn had been idle .all winter but some grair had been left in it. He founl x signs of rats everywhere so he went home and mixed up a solution of strychnine poi- stin, then hé soakeid a bushel of grain in this. Next day he •scattered it around the bam in little heaps. The following day when he returned to the farm he filled the bushel basket with dead rats. Mr. V. Peacock and Mr. G. Cathcart called on Mr. Marshall Fallis and Mrs. Ethel Belch On Sunday afternoon. afternoon. When they returned the three families enjoyed dinner together entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Peacock and sons.
