( SPORTS) Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms split two games last week On Wednesday evening Orono hosted the Manvers team and sent them home with a 5-1 defeat. The game started off with some tight checking and heads up goaltending by both squads. Cameron Esler broke the ice at the 7:35 mark when he banged in Scott McAllister's rebound. Craig Nemis started the play by trapping the puck inside the blueline. Four minutes later Kevin Roberts picked up' a pass from Jeff Hartwig and. Bradley Minnis. Kevin fired a low shot the stick side 'to up the score to 2-0 Orono, end of 1st. Manvers fought back in the second period but Shawn Hardy came up with some big saves to keep them off the scoreboard. Late in the 2nd period Brent Gates received a nice pass from Jason Brachvogel and beat the Manvers goalie with a hard shot. This goal came shortly after Jim Partner hit the goal post from the point. Manvers finally beat Shawn to spoil his shutout early in the 3rd period. With, the score 3-1, Craig Nemis passed the puck to Jeff Hartwig behind the net, Jeff then slipped a pass out to Kevin Roberts who then slapped slapped a high shot into the top right hand corner. Twenty seconds later Cameron Esler spotted David Sheridan breaking clear of the defense, Cameron hit Dave with a perfect pass. Dave skated in, pulled a nice deke on the Manver's goalie and flipped the puck into the net. This closed the game at 5-1 (Orono). Jason Major continues to play strongly on defense, 2ND GAME The Orono Tennant Fuel Atoms are made up of mostly 9 year olds and are competitors competitors with most minor Atom and .mixed Atom teams. , On Saturday night they took on a major Atom team (10 year olds) and were defeated 7-1. The Oshawa Little NHL Bruins proved to be just a little little to experienced for the Fuelers. However, the Fuelers should not be discouraged because the score was not indicative indicative of the game. It was a well-played match with shots on goal being almost even. The Oshawa team had some boys who could really fire the puck and this made the difference in this exhibition exhibition match. Not making excuses, but the Orono team were short 2 regulars and this hurt our chances. The boys want a rematch and maybe next time we will turn the tables, . Brent Gates scored the lone goal for Orono with Kevin Roberts drawing the assist. Ryan Rock and Dustin Reid played strong games. Orono Novice claim Manvers drop game to Millbrook squad On November 26th, Millbrook novice took a 3-0 victory over ' the Orono novices. Although Orono did not get any goals in this game, they played a very good game. It is now that the parents and fans can see a . much improved team over the past few weeks. Goalie, John Buttigieg, saw quite a lot of action in this game , but managed to keep the score quite low with a lot of help from their defensemen. The forward lines made quite a few rushing attempts to get at the Millbrook goal but were held back by the Millbrook lines. This has shown that Orono can play their posi tions when they learn them. On -November 27th Orono novice travelled to Manvers and came home with an 8-2 victory. This game saw Orono grab an early lead with first period goals from Jean- Paul Tousignant, Stephen Stadelmann and Stephen Shetler. Assisting these goals werfe Stephen Stadelmann, Chris Yeo and Neil Haines. The s'econd period gave Orono 3 more goals with Manvers getting 1. Orono goal scorers were Brandon Ovenden with 2 and Chris Yeo 1. Assisting on these goals were, Cameron Tomkins, Tim Hallowed, Jean-Paul Tousignant and Jason Hansen. The third period gave Orono 2 more goals with Manvers getting 1 more. Orono goal scorers were Stephen Stadelmann and Tim Hallowed. Assisting on one goal was Neil Haines. Orono goalie, Mike Doty, put in a good effort with having having 10 shots on him. Orono had 20 shots on the Manvers net, making 8 of them count. Peewee's played some exciting games this week winning ad three and making it five wins in a row. , On November 23rd Newcastle hosted Orono for an exhibition game. Orono won this game 3-2, Orono's Trevor Bogdanow scored the only goal in the first period assisted by Laurens Kaldeway and Steven Hardy. There was no scoring in the second, but in the third Orono made the score 2-0. Blent Stapleton scored this goal, assist going to Mike Goodmurphy. Newcastle came back scoring two goals to tie the game. Scoring was Brad Yarrow from Mike Shaw and Terry Rosamond and Nick Gallello, assisted by Mike Shaw and Mark Millson. With i:29 left in the game Trevor Bogdanow of Orono scored his second goal and the,game winner. Assisting was LauPens Kaldeway, On November 25th Norwood Norwood visited Orono. The final score was Orono 5 - Norwood 3. Orono's Laurens Kaldeway scored the first goal assisted by Trevor Bogdanow. Jason Burnham of Orono made it 2-0 with assists.by Brent Stapleton and Steven Hardy. Norwood then' came back scoring three goals. The first was scored by Tim Rose from Dwayne Brown and Brent Irwin. Then it was Todd Murray assisted by Chris Brown and Tim: Rose, again assist going to Chris Townsend. Orono tied up the game when T.R. Pollitt scored an unassisted goal, Rob Wagenaar of Orono made the *score 4-3 assisted by T.R. Pollitt and Terry Eames. ,The last goal of the game was scored by Oronots Brent Stapleton from T.R. Pollitt. Orono's goalies, Clint Peters and Steven Vanderschee, should be given credit for their outstanding play in this game. On November 26th Orono hosted Ennismore Brown. Orono won 5-4. The first two goals of tpe game were both scored by Orono. The first was Jason Burnham from Brent Stapleton and the second second was by Andy Rorabeck unassisted. Ennismore's Guy Handerson then scored assisted by Troy Crowder, In the second period Orono's Brent Stapleton scored from Jason Burnham. Ennismore then made the score 3-2 when Troy Crowder scored unassisted! In the third brith teams scored twice. Orono's goals went to Brent Stapleton from Jason Burnham and Craig Hyland and Laurens Kaldeway assisted by Brent, Orono Weekly" Times, Wednesday, November 30, 1983-5 Fast skating gives Orono Tykes third win in a row The Tykes, coached by Boyd Knox and Bruce Meadows, won their third game of the season on Saturday, Saturday, November 26th, in Orono against Newcastle by a 6-2 score. The game was lopsided lopsided as the local boys scored six unanswered goals before allowing Newcastle to score. The first period ended up 4-0 as Daryl Reid put one in assisted by Mike Landers, followed by Mike's first goal of the game assisted by Drew Hansen. Daryl scored next, again assisted by Mike. Henry Kaldeway closed out the scoring assisted by Drew Hansen and Greg Knox. The second period saw the local boys continue to press and' Mike Landers got his second of the day when he was put through by Brandon Meadows. Orono's final goal was .scored by Henry Kaldeway, assisted, by - who else? - Mike Landers! Orono eased up in the third period and Adam Connaghan and Chad Petherick potted two for Newcastle. The previous week the same two squads played with Orono coming away with a 6-3 victory. Again the fast skating* powerful scoring and strong defensive play of the Orono team proved too much for the Newcastle boys. Mark Sargent's on-ice assistance helped wMike Landers (3 goals), Henry Kaldeway (2) and Michael Dreslinski to see ,us through. In both games -Steven Sargent played strongly strongly in goal and was ably supported supported by Andrew Burton, Jamie Shetler, Mark Foster and Jason Hill. No team has been able to contain speedy Stutt's Bants Orono 10 - Cobourg 5 On Tuesday, November 22, the Stutts O.M.H.A. Bantams went on a scoring spree as they demolished the Cobourg ttl team by a score of 10-5 in an exhibition game. Orono 4 - Bowmanville Minor Toros 3 Friday, November 25, saw the Stutts Bantams hang on for a 4-3' victory over the minor Toros as the local boys started out strong building up a 4-0 lead after two periods, then laying back and letting the Toros come up with three unanswered third period goals. * Stapleton ând Çteven Hardy.
