* Apple Blossom Shop opens in Orono held in Orono The Orono Downtown Businessmen's Association held their monthly meeting last week and are offering a bonus for those shopping in the Village over the period of. the next three weeks. Coupons will be available in all tirono stores for those wishing to take part in the weekly draws. Just sign your name along with address and telephone number. The winners winners will be contacted each week following the draw. Six winners will be declared on a weekly basis for the three week period with each prize having a value of $25.00. The prize will contain five $5.00 coupons redeemable at specific stores in Orono. The draws will be held on December 10, 17 and 24th. Arrangements have also been made to have Santa visit Orono once more and will greet children on Friday, December 16th and Saturday, 17th at the Orono Showcase Cb-operative in the old Armouries Armouries building. It is also expected that sleigh rides will be available on Saturday afternoon, December 17th, The D.B.I.A. is also to revamp the Christmas decorations that enhance the business section before the ne^t holiday season rolls around. Late Friday afternoon the Apple Blossom Shop in Orono was officially opened with the cutting of the traditional traditional ribbon. Yvonne Maitland of Orono has always held an interest in flowers ând floral arrangements arrangements and has now undertaken a stand in the business section with flowers and à host of suitable gifts on the shelves. During the recent Downtown Businessmen's promotion in Orono in which Mrs. Jack Ogden of R.R. Newtonville was the winner of a weekend for two at Pinestone Lodge in Haliburton close to 7000 coupons were filled out and deposited in the Village Store. Of this number 140 took the time and opportunity opportunity to comment on the bottom of the coupon as to the Orono Business section. 1 Eighty of the 140 were favourable responses either to the area as a whole or to, in some cases specific stores. Of the eighty 39 had addresses other than Orono or Orono rural routes and were as far away as Weston, Ontario. ' Fourteen responses called for more parking 'with six suggesting a Stedman's store apd a like dumber for extended banking hours. In general the favourable responses totalling 80 were most complimentary but did not include such as enjoyment of the flower boxes, trees. Four responses called for better snow removal. Lucky Draw winners - Bertha White, iBev -Wakefield. , The next card party is Wednesday, December 14th, 1983 at 8:00 p.m. SCHOOL BOARD CLOSE TO TARGET ■Business administrator, Jim Bird, of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Developing plans for Malaysian School < in Town The consulting firm of Totten Totten Sims Hubicki have been hired to provide plans for the revamping of the Pine Ridge Training school buildings, Bowman ville, for school purposes purposes for Malaysian students. The engineering firm will produce preliminary and final designs for • upgrading the heating, plumbing and sewer systems at the school. The school is to originally accommodate 150 students which are expected to take up residence this coming September providing work can start early enough in he new year to be completed for the school term. The complex when com- . pleted will accommodate 400 students from Malaysia who will use the Bowmanville school as a finishing school for University and College entrance both in Canada and the United States. The purchase has yet to be completed although the province province accepted the Malaysian groups offer of $325,200. The school intends to hire staff from the immediate area including the principal for the school, ' The school will operate for students at the grade 13 level. Board of Education, states the board is close to being on target as far as the 1983 budget is concerned. As of the end of October the board had spent some $2 million more than revenue but revenue in the remainder of the year is expected to be $2 million over expenditures. The commercial aspect of the Village of Orono was aroused last week with the ■ grand opening of two stores, Armstrong's IGA Food Market and The Apple Blossom Shop -for flowers and gifts. Both, the Armstrongs and Yvonne Maitland state the response to their new enterprises enterprises were beyond expectations expectations and-look to a bright and successful future. In speaking with Bill Armstrong Armstrong of their new sparkling develoment in the northeast corner of the Village said the response 'was tremendous during the'first week. He said they had set their hopes high not really knowing what the acceptance would be but that response had been most gratifying gratifying from the shopping public. In referring to the downtown area Bill Armstrong Armstrong hoped that the two" segments of the Orono Commercial Commercial area could work together in promoting business in Orono. "I don't want to be left out," he said. Yvonne Maitland of The Apple Blossom Shop said she was thoroughly surprised over the interest in her shop at the opening late Friday afternoon and evening.
