Council recognizes committee work rescinded by council The Town of Newcastle council on Monday rescinded previous recent action in setting setting forth a new street lighting policy and will reconsider reconsider a new proposal to be set forth as policy in the very near future. Council had set policy which would have directed thirty percent of thé cost of installation and operation to the general rate for new street lighting programs and for program in existance. The new program would have reduced costs for street lighting in such areas as Orono, Newcastle and Bowmanville while on the other hand would, have increased increased costs in the Orono Estates sub-division. The proposal that was accepted accepted recently has créated a torrent of opposition from the rtiral area which was expressed expressed on Monday night by a delegation from the Durham Federation of Agriculture headed by Don Welsh. Welsh said the Federation and especially the directors of the federation from Newcastle were opposed opposed to the new policy. He pointed out it was wrong and that in fact farmers were paying paying more in taxes than other residents in the Town. Councs. Woodyard and Harare who had presented a notice of motion calling for reconsideration of the policy and the rescinding of the new policy both noted the need for policy and said that although they supported the rescinding of their recent ac- ,(Continued page 14) Monday evening the Town of Newcastle council recognized work undertaken, by members of'the Newcastle Recreation and Culture Master Plan Committee and presented plaques to the members. Other members of the committee unable to attend the presentation were Kelly MacDonnell, Sandra Best, Gary Blazak, Rick Allin and Dr. Rod McArthur, Top musicians for Newcastle concerts Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly times, Wednesday, December 14, 1983 Co-op busing gets approval from Board Bell prepares for Christmas calling The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education at a meeting in Bowmanville Bowmanville last Wednesday evening gave the nod for the funding of Co-operative transportation transportation which affect close to 200 students at Clarke High school. The decision was laid over from a previous meeting. The Board decided to set aside $23,000 in thé transportation transportation budget for Co-op Education transportation of which the major portion will supply co-op busing for students at Clarke High School. $12,000 of the amount will go to Clarke while $3,000 will be allotted to co-op transporation at Courtice which as Clarke is. a rural secondary school and most co-op studpnts have to be bused to their job placements. The Board also passed that students could be bused no further than a 30 kilometer radius of any school. ORONO- Canadians are expected to place about 6,000,000 long distance phone calls to relatives and friends around the world on Christmas Day, all but half a million 1 of them by direct distance dialing. In 'Ontario, Bell Canada expects Christmas Day to have the heaviest volume of calls during the yuletide period, closely followed by Christmas Eve. Thé other busy days will ' be Boxing Day, December 26th, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and the two Sundays, preceeding Christmas. The concertswill take place in Newcastle Community Hall on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The four concerts lined up for the present series are the Climax J'azz Band on February 19; Entracte *(a guitar and flute duo) on March "25.; Marc Widner, pianist on' May 6; and the Horseless Carriage Men (Oshawa Barbershop Chorus) on May 13, The Climax Jazz Band has ( played in over 50 cities and towns in Ontario; at festivals in Sacramento, California; Denver,- Colorado and New Orleans, Louisiana and in many jazz clubs in 11 states. The band appeared in the Dryboughs International Jazz Festival in Edinburgh in 1982. It has also visited Van- Students visit Orono Showcase Co-operative couver and Montreal and has appeared on Canadian, American and Japanese television shows. The music is hearty, happy, joyful traditional traditional jazz. The tunes are a mixture of really old things and at least a couple of tunes that most people will not have heard before. Marc Widner and the artists artists in Entracte are sponsored sponsored by Jeunesse Musicales - Youth and Music Canada, an international organization dedicated to giving promising young musicians a chance to be heard and helping them up the ladder of success. Maureen Forrester and the Orford String Quartet started this way. The Horseless Carriage Men need no introduction to people in this area. Mayor Garnet Rickard has graciously consented to be Honorary Chairman of the Newcastle and District Concert Concert Series Organization. He is expected to have candy canes for the youngsters and hot cider for the adults. Orono Wagon Rides Along with his visit to Orono Santa has also made arrangements for wagon or sleigh rides (weather permitting). These rides will leave the Orono Town Hall with hours coinciding with nose of Sanata's visit. Come to Orono tor the .afternoon and do bring the kids. A group of young students from the Orono Public School paid a visit to the Orono Showcase Cooperative Cooperative last week where the various items on display by local artisans werd explained by Co-operative chairperson, Ann Dreslinski. The Co-operative is open to the public Friday afternoon afternoon and evening, Saturday afternoon and Sunday after- "nbon.
