Although we say our daughter and family live in Edmonton, in fact, it is Stony Plain, a small community just outside of the City. . ike most rural communities communities in the west it all ap pears to have centred around the grain elevators while in recent years the community has somewhat mushroomed out with new commercial and residential developments. The old atmosphere still remains remains in some sectors', Jhowever. Of interest to me was the Stony Plain Rçporter published by Steven Dills who originated from western Ontario. This newspaper is a ( constant winner of awards for excellence in their that some boards are now taking parents to Small Claims Court in an effort to collect the charge when over $30.00. But Stony Plain does have its problems even though it has cutits staff in half within one week of the October election, election, has closed its new community community centre hopeful that some service club will take over its operation. The cuts go much deeper than just the few mentioned above. Likely Stony Plain will be able to make some deal with the Province to ward-off such a tax increase. There is little ; doubt that they need to be bailed out. Announcement The Orono Little Charitable Foundation is pleased to announce that effective January 1st, 1984 Dr. M. K. Angl will be opening an office for the practice of Family Medicine at the Orono Medical Centre. The other, members of the Foundation also wish Dr. A. F. McKenzie health and ' happiness on his retirement and thank him for his many years of devotion and service to the community. Michele Mahon and Jeff de Jonge were united in marriage marriage tin Saturday, July 23rd, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Pembroke with Father John Harrington officiating, officiating, assisted by Rev. Basil Long. Michele is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mahon and Jeff is the son of, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit de Jonge, Orono. Jeff and Michele are living in Morris, Manitoba where Jeff is a student minister. category from across Canada and so it called for a visit while in Stony Plain. The publisher was not in at the time but I did pick up a number of issues to hopefully scalp a few ideas that we might introduce to the Orono Times. Certainly there is a lot going going for the Stony Plain Reporter which also is associated with other newspapers such as Spruce Grove, the home riding of Joe Clarke. The most recent addition I was able to pick-up and it was current at the time screamed of taxes increasing by fifty percent for 1984. The average home paying $1100.00 was going up to close to $1700.00. Now whether or not that real- ■ ly v happenings is another thing but all the incredients for the rise are apparently there. In fact the new mayor, just recently elected, stated that if they were a private industry industry the Town would be declaring bankruptcy. Stony Plain has a population population of 5,500, a $12.5 million municipal debenture debt and further facing a 1983 deficit of $857,000. Fifty- three percent of the total tax on a residence goes to offset the debt charges. Thirty-two percent goes to education and 15 percent for municipal services. services. Other charges make up the rest of the tax bill. The 30 percent to education education caught our eye since in ' Ontario this can run upwards from 50 to 65 percent. Of course one has- to consider the heavy debt charges in Stony Plain that would tend to reduce the educational portion on a percentage basis. But there is another factor in Alberta and most school boards do charge a fee for every student attending and this can range from a meagre $12.00 to as much aj $174.00. This amount* comes directly from the parent and is payable upon enrolment each year. This is an issue in Alberta at this time and the Ministry of Education is looking into the matter to see just how far reaching this charge is and if it is hampering some in attending attending school.
