2-()rono Weekly Times, Wednesday. December 21, 1983 <&rono $BeeMp Simes Second Class Mail Registration Number 000368 Published Every Wednesday at the office of Publication ■Main Street, Orono Roy C, Forrester, Editor Christmas 1983 Now is the season we sing Peace on Earth. An inseparable inseparable part of the ageless Christmas message is the angels' exultation to the shepherd outside Bethlehem; ... on earth peace, good will toward men." It is a goal which men of goodwill have sought through all the centuries centuries of Christendom. The quest has been beset by almost constant frustration. Wars have grown in scope as the world's population has grown and their destructive ferocity has increased with the increase of man's scientific knowledge. Nearly 2000 years after the first Christmas, when the Son of God came to bring peace to the world, there is no peace. Even though there is no ominous nuclear flash on the horizon, as ye, we know that peace is not with us. There have been wars and rumors of wars, social unrest and injustices of dll kinds when out Lord Was born, and this condition-has maintained. There are times when it seems we must surely conclude "times of trouble" is here to stay. . ' It may be asked what this has to do with Christmas 1983? However Christmas is the season of the year when our thoughts, by the very nature of the event we celebrate, should cause us to think, of peace and how best we can fulfill the mission that the Christ came to earth to perform. Too sombre a theme for the Christmas season? We think not. Before we become immersed in Yuletide pleasantries should we not give sincere thought to the true meaning of Christmas? The least we can do, if we profess to be men of goodwill, is to honour' the Christmas message and its Author. When we do this, we will then have every right to rejoice and be glad and join the heavenly throng in singing: "Glory to God-in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." Only three years before he had made a visit to the Holy Land and he was suddenly over- ' whelmed by a desire to let all these boys and girls know what it meant to stand under the quiet stars of the Bethlehem sky on Christmas Eve. Almost before he knew it he was putting down some verses: Line by line until five stanzas had been completed. He took the words to Mr. Lewis Redner the organist and choir leader of his church. Mr. Redner at once recognized the beauty of the verses. He must have been ■ equally inspired that very night he woke up from a sound slumber with the'lovely tune St. Louis ringing in his mind. When the Christmas program program took place there was a happy outpouring of children's voices in the new carol it made an. immediate appeal to all listeners. Gradually other churches heard of it. How astonished Phillip Brooks would 1 have been if, somebody had told him that his carol would someday be: sung all ovër-thc world! On Sunday morning Dec. : 18 Kendal Sunday School put on an fine program. We were greeted at the door by Sandra Atkins and Brad Foster. Seated at the piano was Andrew Andrew Hellebust. I see recorded for last year the words, very warm. On Sat. evening Dfec. 17 the Kendal Sunday School and their parents went-bowl- ing to Port Hope. They all reported a good . time. Then they returned to Kendal Sunday Sunday School for lunch and an exchange of gifts. Thirty four went. Kendal Women's Insitute met in tfie, Sunday School Room for a pot luck Christmas dinner on December 14 with nineteen ladies present. We were honoured by the attendance of the District President, Mrs. 'H. Prescott, Maple Grove. After.the dinner Mrs. Heather Caruso gave us a talk o^Graphoanalysis, the study of handwriting to determine a persons characteristics. The most of those present took part in a tree contest while à few packed the baskets for the shut-in people. It always surprises me that simple simple questions in a contest .are so hafd to answer, (e.g., What tree Is a double tre what tree is the name of a g> pliis the name of a boy?) If you know O.K. If not I'll tell you next week. Among the baskets of fruit I delivered was one to Mrs. Vera May (Mrs. Eugene Martin) Martin) in Bowmanville Hospital. She used to live on the Sixth line of Clarke. She has been in Bowmanville Hospital for thirty years having a condition condition that needs daily attention. attention. She is a very cheerful person and so appreciative of anything done for her.
