Celebrates first birthday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 21, 1983-3 children should clear away leftover food and drink soon Hi! My name is Tyler Lowery Robinson, and 1 celebrated my first birthday on November 13, 1983. Celebrating with me were my proud parents, Chris and Lynn Robinson (nee Letter to Editor Mr. Forrester: Since it appears that your publication is being used as a vehicle to express certain opinions opinions and complaints, may we be afforded the same privelege to allow us to reply: But before addressing the several issues raised in the letter letter by Mrs. Haines, let us state that the Orono Anfateur Athletic Association is much concerned with all minor sports in our community and to that end endeavours to provide not only facilities.for hockey and figure skating, but summer sports as well. We are at a loss as to what questions have been .raised and by whom, stranger still is that insistence that questions have not been answered by those "gentlemen". As to the issue of banners, it must be realized that most hockey centres award trophies and if all would be displayed, the arena would require additional room. In view of this, some screening is required regarding banners. banners. A decision has been made that banners will be displayed one season and then turned over to the recipient recipient team. One exception are Ontario finalist and championship banners which will be cleaned when necessary and become a permanent permanent display. By the way, certain coaches had been apprised apprised of this decision prior Lowery), Orono and my grandparents Gordon and Marjorie Lowery and Gerald and Dorothy Robinson, Orono. My great grandparents are Arthur arid Mildred White, to the issue appearing in the Orono Times. We are sure that everybody has seen the banners on display by now - better late than never. As to tournaments; At the beginning of each hockey season all coaches are advised, advised, that the arena manager is > to be informed as soon as possible regarding icetime for tournaments. The association "endeavours to accommodate the tri-courity and O.M.H.Â. .teams to some degree. It nust be pointed out that icetime used by Orono teams is subsidized subsidized considerable amount through the association as fees charged to Orono teams and. Skatp Club i& con- : sidçrable less than the fees charges to rentals. Contrary to what has been suggested, tournaments are not a source of good revenue, furthermore without the use of the upstairs hall on weekends, (it is booked for a year in advance), advance), it would be difficult to hold a large tournament. The ôldtimers hold a one day tournament usually at the beginning of prior to regular season. We should state, that the association is not just a bunch of oldtimers, some of us consider ourselves -very young, age is no restriction, all we want is dedication and willingness to work for the community. As to colour of team sweaters, etc., The association looked very seriously at the "survey" and did resolve that the official tèam-jaci.et colour colour is royal blue with red and white trim. The team sweaters are purchased by individual individual sponsors at a cost or Bowmanville, Perry and Francis Sanders, ; Peterborough, Peterborough, Mrs. Catherine Lowery, Kirby and Mrs. Betty Betty Robinson, Pontypool. Merry Christmas Everyone! approx. $500. per team, usually every two years. Orono averages 10 teams per season, that amounts to a great deal of money. There are of course summer sport sponsors as well, but the following are hockey sponsors; sponsors; Francis Tennant Fuel, Roughley Insurance, Matthews Matthews & Hill Insurance, Stutts Pharmacy, Hamilton Insurance, New Dutch Oven Restaurant, Camsport, Odd Fellows, Kins Club, etc., .'Surely their effort in providing providing our teams with sweaters, socks and other considerations, deserves better better than ,4 comment made in the article "Dressed in cast off's that look like Good Will". Many of the sponsors wish td have a choice in col- ,our,a(id design others would not Object to having one colour, colour, Ajs to women sitting on the Athletic, whjf not indeed. Years ago there have been • women members, furthermore furthermore no restictions are placed ori membership ' nor are meetings held in camera. All we require is a committment tO take an active part in the affairs of the association - we are not a social club. The women of our community community have always taken a strong and active part in fundraising, fundraising, but to insist that the majority of work is done by only the women is somewhat incorrect. The Fundraising Committee functions separately and has been effec- > tive in obtaining help from both men rind women i.e., Beef B.B.Q., paper drives, meals and bar duties. We are pleased with the results, in particular the paving of the parking lot recently; ■ As to girls being given less of a chance to participate in sports; An attempt to form a ringette team a year ago resulted in a very poor response (6 persons), we do appreciate that girls are restricted from O.M.H.A. hockey but any other level of hockey for girls require other teams in the area and there are few and far between. The problem of dressing rooms and facilities required pose a concern also. Our girls do participate in summer sports at ail levels and ' are given plenty of opportunity. , As to the association and "oldtimers" attitude; Yes there are some oldtimers, in fact some have been around since the first artificial ice .was put in the old tin shed. It amazes the new and younger ' members why these guys keep working at it and you know they have not done bad ih being being instrumental in having helped to provide a community community centre and arena second second to none as well as sports to our youths. The fact that our centre is able to operate in the black, (not many do in Ontario), without help from the municipal budget, is, a credit to our community old, young, female and male. . The only pay received by - those "oldtimers" and young timers is the satisfaction in doing something that provides provides sports to our youths. As a point of interest, ' the operating budget for 1982-83 was in excess of 160,000.00 dollars and at the end of the year all bills wer.e paid. Not bad we think, nor a responsibility responsibility taken lightly. Perhaps the members of the association association will reassess their .com- (Continued page 5) Parties - If you partake of holiday cheer, let someone els|e drive, warns the Ontario Safety.
