(Prono Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 28, 1983 Citizens invited to Mayor's Levee New assessments to arrive early January The Town of Newcastle has given approval for the reassessment reassessment of all property in the Town relating to 1980 property values. The Department is holding a series of meetings as to the new 1980 market value assessments. A series of four meetings are being held in the Police and Fire Building in Bowmanville on Wednesday, January 18th, Thursday, January 19th, Friday, . January 20th and Saturday, January 21st. An advertisement advertisement will appear in this paper on January 6th outlining places and times of meetings. Re-assessment to 'the 1980 land values does not change the total assessment for the Town of Newcastle but rather shifts assessment within the various clashes, residential, multi-residential, commercial, commercial, industrial and farm. The Town would collect no more in total tax monies providing the mill rate did not change. There is however one factor factor that will bring an increase of two percent into the Town treasury providing there ' would be no successful appeals appeals granted over the 1980 assessment figures. The Ministry has added two percent percent to assessment to allow for the loss of assessment through appeals. The Town did lose into the hundreds of thousands of dollars in assessment when the last change was made a few.years back. Due to re-assessnient to the 1980 market value the 2806 ^ (Continued' page 2) Orono Fire Department Bust Over Holidays The Orono department of the Town of Newcastle Newcastle Fire Department were busy over the Christinas holidays answering four fire calls, none of which created,a great deal of dgmage. '. -, * The firefighters answered a call to Wm. Parkers where an overheated dishwasher motor caused some smoke. The department also answered a. chimney fire call to the home of Mrs. Wendy Westbrook. The department was called to a fire in Leskard where straw in the basement of a log home under construction construction owned by Mr. Keys had caught fire damaging a few of the logs. The.blaze caused little damage! On Monday the Orono tanker truck was called to assist the Bowmanville department with a fire in the Mosport area. The fire had been extinguished before the departments arrived. Oddfellow's Turkey Draw Winners The Orono Oddfellow's held their Christmas Turkey draw last week netting $500.00 from (he event for community work. Winners of the ten turkeys were: David Kingsley, Orono, Jean Spry, Cobourg; Paul Coates, Brighton; Ruby Shackleton, Bethany; Peggy Sawyer, Orono; Paul Howes; Richard Donlop, Orono; Lena Crysdale, Newtonville; Mrs. Louie Borilic, Orono and Robert Casey, Orono. Christmas general meeting All citizens in thé Town of Newcastle are invited to the Mayor's Levee being held Sunday, January 1st .in the council' chambers at 132 Church Street, Bowmanville. The Mayor's Levee is being held from the hour of 12:30 to 2:30 and it is expected the cake will be cut by Mayor Rickard at 1:00 p.m. This is the first time the Town of Newcastle has promoted promoted the Mayor's Levee. The Levee will usher in the Ontario Bicentennial as well as observing the tenth anniversary anniversary of the Region of Durham and the Town of Newcastle. Assisting the Mayor with the levee will be members of council as well as staff. On the evening of Thursday, Thursday, December 15th, in the Main Hail at Orono United Church, some 30 to 35 ladies were present at the Christmas General Meeting - and sat down to a delicious pot-luck supper - with a great variety of casseroles, salads, meats,, biscuits, etc. and topped off with many tempting desserts. Unit 5 did a splendid task of setting the tables which looked looked very much in the seasonal theme with Christmas arrangements arrangements and lighted candles. Following the meal, a splendid treat was in store, when we were entertained by a group of Girl Guides, and some Brownies and Guide leaders. These girls had been out carolling, and also brought us their Christmas message in song. Joyce Gray accompanied on the piano, and also for the U.C.W. group to sing more carols. Rev. W.. Wright was present present and carried out the installation installation of the 1984-85 U.C.W. Executive. Devotions were given by members of Unit 4. Thelma Vagg opened with a poem "Because It's Christmas". Leader, Donna Scott, mentioned mentioned the fact of many of the tilings'with whiçh we are occupied occupied in the midst of the Christmas rush - gift buying and wrapping - decorating our homes - shopping - baking baking cookies, etc. We should pause and think about, some other kinds of gifts which we receive all year long. Joyce Cowan opened the gift of a dove - which represents peace. If, our hearts are troubled or sad, or toô impatient, impatient, we can ask'for the gift of God's peace, and He will give it to us. Lynn Rodd opened the gift of a candle, which represents the gift of Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world. It is only because His shining love pierced the darkness of this world that we can live in the light of His love. Lorna Atkins opened the gift of a Bible which represents God's gift of wisdom. We can have God's wisdom and His kind of understanding by reading and studying the Bible. It is a, guide for our lives, Betty Chatterton opened the gift of a wreath which represents an eternal circle. God's love for us is like that - complete and never-ending. Donna Scott gave the Christmas prayer. Offering was received and dedicated. The Devotion closed with everyone singing, "Let There Be Peace On Earth". President Lois Brown read (Continued page 2) Expect move to new fire hall in January Thc'new fire hall in Orono is expected to be open sometime between mid January and the end of the month. '• Mr. Jim Hayman, former fire chief, is acting as liasipn for council and the department' department' in the finalization of Construction. • He points out that it does take a required period of time for the curing of cement in the floor and that there had been a hold-up in obtaining windows for the building. Otherwise everything is looking good at the site states Mr. Hayman. While many waited in lineups lineups and even resorted to jumping jumping over counters' and elbowing their 1 way to, the front of the line, Mrs. Thelma Forrester', Orono, sat in the comfort of her easy 'chair of her own home to obtain obtain her three Cabbage Patch dolls. Armed vtith a pattem'for the dolls from Mrs. Beriyce Partner', Partner', two-wây stretch natural colour material, qùilt batten and needle and thread she brought to life three dolls from the Cabbage patch complete complete with all the features of a store-boughten creature, dimples, pug nose etc. Ana Annie ana Lizzie were completely clothed along with bright coloured hair, all the result of the ingenuity of the local creator. The dqlls are now the property property of the two young granddaughters granddaughters who no doubt appreciate appreciate this' piece of creativity- creativity- ' P. *-» <y . •
