BOX Î09, ORONO, ONTARIO L0B1MO PRINTING AND PUBLISHING REXDALE.Ont. - Factory robots generally displace human workers. But Echlin Canada Inc., a 200- employee company which manufactures manufactures brake parts, actually created 60 new jobs directly as a result of installing a two-robot assembly assembly workcell. According to Echlin Canada General Manager Mike Regan, the workcell has enabled the Rexdale plant, which produces brake slack adjusters, to almost triple output, improve quality and reduce costs. As a result, the U.S.- based parent company transferred additional work to its Canadian operations, creating a third assembly assembly shift. Slack adjusters, which weigh about eight pounds, are used in heavy trucks and tractor trailers to ensure they have maximum braking braking power. As the brake shoes begin to wear, the device does what its name suggests - adjusts the slack. "We're very please with the robots," says Regan. "Not only are they able to automatically assemble 30 different kinds of slack adjusters, they enable us to number, test and record on computer computer the quality of each part produced, produced, something no one else in the industry is doing. We've gained an important market advantage advantage as a result." Echlin's foray into industrial robotics began with a visit to the Ontario Robotics Centre in Peterborough, Peterborough, an Ontario Crown corporation corporation which helps manufacturers manufacturers learn about and apply advanced manufacturing technology. "We had no background in automation of any kind," Regan recalls. "We just took some of our products along to see if there were X-Country Skiing at CLOCA Start the 1986 year off right! Plan to attend C.L.O.C.A.'s Cross- Country Ski Outing on January 12, This expedition, which begins at 1:00 p.m., will follow the ski trails at Heber Down Conservation Area. It is not a race, rather it is an opportunity opportunity to view nature in alt its winter glory.. .so all ages are encouraged to attend. The outing will be guided by one of the Authority's interpretive staff members, who will be pointing out animals, tracks, trees, birds and whatever else arouses curiosity. those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the ski parking lot at Heber Down Conservation Area. Directions to Heber Down: follow Taunton Road 2 km west of Highway 12, turn right at the golf course and follow Country Lane Road north to a T-junction, turn right and go Vi km east to the parking parking lot. Watch for signs along the route. For those persons who are not avid skiers, perhaps the following tip may be useful. It is important to , remember that cross-country skiing generates a lot of body heat. Therefore, it is necessary to dress in layers of light clothing. Then, as thê body becomes too warm, a layer of clothing can be removed to make skiing more enjoyable. See you and your family there! For more information, contact Steve LaForest at the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority office office at (416) 579-0411. Ill m Ontario Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Hugh O'Neil (right) and John Gethin, Vice-president of Echlin Inc., jointly push the start up button for Echlin Canada's new robotic assembly workcell. The two-robot workcell enabled the company to almost triple production of brake components, and as a,result it hired 60 new people. any likely prospects for automating automating production." Designers and engineers at the Centre worked with Echlin's manufacturing staff to develop a conceptual design of the robotic assembly workcell and then subcontracted subcontracted with Numet Engineering Engineering of Peterborough to actually build the workcell. This was Numet's first robotic engineering, assignment and as a consequence of the experience gained it has since signed a joint contract with a West Coast firm to design and manufacture arbbotic control system for the U.S. Navy. • According to Ian Barrie, General General Manager of thp Robotics Centre, more and more manufacturing manufacturing companies are following Echlin's example by .investigating and installing industrial robots. '•'For most companies, the goal isn't to replace worker^; the goal is to improve productivity and quality," he maintains. "In fact, applying technology helps to make'jobs more secure ahd unemployment unemployment is certain to be higher in ■ those companies that don'tlook at new manufacturing technology. , They will soon find their products and their plants aren't competitive competitive anymore." But Barrie says there is some still some confusion about what robots can and can't do. "Today's industrial robots are a far cry from Star Wars. Robots, in fact, can only do a limited number number of tasks - such as welding, painting, applying glue and simple assembly jobs. While they come in many different sizes and shapes, they are mostly singlearmed singlearmed machines bolted to the plant floor. What makes them different different from other machines is that they are run by a computer and can be reprogrammed to do different different jobs." Barrie estimates # that there are now about 1200 robots at work in Canadian factories, 85 per cent of which are in Ontario. And he says the number of robots in the country is growing by 40 per cent per year. r Great Pineridge , Kinette Club .
