The Orono Public Schodl is now taking applications for the regular kindergarten and for the new Junior Kindergarten starting this coming September. To date 24 Regular kindergarten students havebeen enrolled with 21 ebing enrolled for. Junior Kindergarten. Students for regular kindergarten must be.fjvee years of age on or before December 31, 1986 while students -for the new Junior JUST SANK OUT OF SIGHT This" story starts back in midspring midspring of 1985 when sitting with binoculars on the bank of the Garden Hill pond observing the ducks playing around in the water. As usual the so called dabblers, those ducks that feed off the bot- tojn on aquatic plants, were circling around the edge of the pond where the water is of a depth that they can reach the bottom by tipping up and reaching to the bed of the pond. The feW diving ducks were swimming swimming aroiind in : the deeper waters where they were taking a little jump up and then diving to the bottom of the pond for small fish, insects and possibly crustaceans, if such were presept. „ It 'wasn't long before my attention attention -was attracted to a Horned Grebe, which is a small duck-like bird and often called hell divers. The Grebe is a diver and as such was swimming around with the diving diving ducks, in the deeper waters of the pond. With the binoculars 1 watched a number of dives by the Grebe who would then return to the surface to cruise about. Keeping the binoculars on the bird and expecting another dive I was more than surprised to see the bird just sink with none of the efforts efforts of a dive. Of course this took me to one of the bird books where I Community Services Report (Continued from page 1) preciated the fact that the school board did not need the school grounds in the summer months. Jan Devantier said the department department was working to improve relationships relationships with the school board . over this matter. Counc. McKnight said he . v " '.-stood there, was a continuing ,gue between the town and board over the joint use of school ' property and that if there was a problem problem then they should be meeting with the board chairman. He said, learned the Grebe family can either dive or submerge which is the same case for the loon family. It was sometime after that I was talking to Len Pears, who has considerable considerable knowledge of birds, and 1 was relating the antics of the Grebe. Len told me that both Grebes and Loons can change their specific gravity and thus become heavier jhan water and will sink when they so desire. , ■ I, must say I was a little skeptical of this fact and did- bring up the subject with Bill Bunting on one of our recent outings. A couple of weeks.later Bill informs m$ that, yes the bird , can change its specific gravity according to a recent article he had read. This brought up the subject of how? We both recalled the experiment experiment in high school of dropping the stone in a beaker of water, weighing the discharged water and dividing that weight into the weight of the 'stone .to determine Rhe specific gravity. Incidentally its a formula ■passed down by Archimedes following following firs jumping into a bath tub filled filled with water and then realizing his body volume had spilled out onto the floor. Finally we determined the Grebe could not change its weight so as to sink. It has to decrease its volume "Lets not let this simmér". The director pointed out that joint use of playgrounds was a logical course to' follow and would be a considerable savings to the Town on capital costs. Counc. Stapleton said the, Newcastle Community Services Planning Board held this as a priority and that the board and the town should get together. Mayor Winters said he found the report to be vague and he was not sure of its purpose. "I would like to sec goals, and objectives," he said. Counc. Stapleton said he liked the report but would like to see more detail-. Kindergarten must be four vears of age by December 31, 1986. Parents of students should enrol their children now so as to give ample ample time to prepare for the opening of school in September. Pictured above is one of the acclivities acclivities of the kindergarten class at the Orono Public School. and thus increase its specific gravity beyond that of water. Len Pears has the explanation of this with the bird being able to compress it's feathers and exhausting air from it's lungs and body which has the effect of decreasing its volume. Both the Grebe and Lo'on arc capable of only partially submerging submerging leaving a portion of their neck , and head out of the water. The 'how' we now have but the question remains why has nature given these the ability to both dive and submerge? (Continued from page If thumberlarid and Newcastle Board will receive some $10,000 to provide transportation for Co-op students. She said this cost has had to be borne by local taxpayers in the past, Last year the Board had received received $123,000 from the federal government for Co-op Education. John Sylvestervich, n,ow head of the Resource Centre at the Board office started Co-op education at Clarke High School in 1973 and was 'one of only a small number of schools in the province offering the option to students. In 1979 Eva Nichols took over the program at Clarke and along with this duty has Served the Ontario Co-op Education Education Association as secretary and presently as president. Currently Mrs. Nichols is conducting conducting Certification courses at. York University and the University of Toronto for teachers whose board now intend to take part in Co-op Education. The program announced by Conway Conway is a two-part program called the Co-operative Education and Transition-to-emplpymerit Incentive Incentive Fund. Conway said there is no doubt iri his mind that Co-op Education works and that there is a continuing need for teacher assistance t'O; find .quality placements for students now in cooperative cooperative education. Times, Wednesday, January 22, 1986-3 School boards are to receive funds to initiate or expand cooperative cooperative education and to also expand expand transition-tq-employment programs for students leaving high school. Monies are also to be made available to . assist students to overcome overcome financial barriers and to hire a resource person. The premier of Ontario, David Peterson, has said that every graduating student Should have at least one experience in Co-operative Education. Motorcycle proposal ' (Continued from page 1) unreasonable to create more trails out of the Forest Centre for skiing which would only add to greater congestion. He said the Motorcycle Club should be more concerned of their, own image than brushing ski trails. He said bikers should follow the direction taken by snowmobilers who have formed numerous clubs with the intent of improving their image and conduct. Although the committee turned aside the Motorcycle Club's proposal proposal they did recommend that Authority staff meet with the Club in an effort to come to an agreement agreement over acceptable use of the 1 forest by bikers. A Ganaraska Forest Study has set policy restricting motorized vehicles to certain roadways in the forest.
