4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 22, 1986 Holiday Juice Novice One Up and One Down Matthews & Associates strong contenders at Bobcaygeon BOBCAYGEON TOURNAMENT Orono 3 - Peterborough 0 On January 18, 1986 the Matthews Matthews and Hill Peewees travelled to Bobcaygeon to participate in their tournament. In the first game Orono drew Knox United from Peterborough and skated away with a 3-0 win to advance to the A side of the tourney. Blaine Souch opened the scoring late into the second period when he converted David Sheridan's pass into into a goal. > Midway through the second period Orono drew ahead 2-0 when Tyler Gibson received a beautiful pass from Blaine Souch and fired a low wrist shot to the glove side. David Sheridan earned the other assist when he stole the puck along the boards and relayed it up to Blain. Matt Stephenson salted away the victory when he slipped one into the far corner after Todd Gray made a nice play to set him up. Brian Rodd did the bullwork on the goal to earn the other assist. This game featured good forechecking by the Matthews and Hill gang with goalie Billy Todd coming up with some big saves when needed. Jeff Hartwig and Mike Good- murphy played strong games to anchor anchor a good defensive effort. Orono 5 - Omemee 5 In the second match we drew a tough Omemee crew and at the end of regulation time it was a 5-5 deadlock. This proved to be one of the most exciting games of the year with both teams skating miles. The situation looked bad for Orono even though we played evenly evenly with Omemee for the fijst half of the game. While Orono couldn't get any breaks Omemee managed to score three unanswered go.als. It was at thç 5:52 mark of the second period when Orono finally tallied. Tyler Gibson was the marksman after he fired a low shot between the 'Omemee netminder's legs after David Sheridan and Blaine Souch combined some slick passing to set him up. Matt Stephenson put his team back in the game when he flipped . one into the top corner after some great pressure around the opposition's opposition's net. Todd Gray and' Brian Rodd did some real digging to earn assists on the play. Omemee opened the third period with a goal of their own to make it a 4-2 game. However Orono kept fighting back with Todd Gray scoring scoring another power play goal after sinking Matt Stephenson's shot off the boards. Brian "The Train" Rodd set the play up with a nice pass to Matt. David "Shifty" Sheridan tied the game up at 4:56 mark by blasting in Blaine Souch's rebound after Blaine went in all alone. Tyler Gibson started the play with a nice pass. Just seconds later Omemee again took the lead when their captain Steve Lucas scored. With just 56 seconds remaining Tyler Gibson tied the game up again when Todd Gray and Matt Stephenson set him up. Under the tournament rules the game was then decided by each team selecting three players each for a shootout. At this point with each team scoring a goal, three more players were then selected and Orono came up one goal short to lose a heartbreaker. This was a great team effort by Orono considering there were two men short due to sickness. Jason Adey played strongly on defense . with goalie Shawn Hardy playing extremely well to keep his team in the game. Orono 7 - Newcastle 3 After losing a playoff squeaker 2-1 against Millbrook last week Orono rebounded back with a 7-3 win over Newcastle on Thursday night. The Matthews and Hill gang struck early in the first period and never looked back. David Sheridan fired a low wrist shot into the far corner after Blaine Souch won the face off cleanly. Just seconds later Brian Rodd fired in a hard low wrist shot after Todd Gray set him up nicely. Newcastle fought back to close the period out with Nicky Gallello finding the mark. Jason Adey opened the second period when he combined with Blaine Souch and David Sheridan - to gain a clear cut breakaway and slipped one into the glove side to make it a 3-1 game. At the 4:30 mark David "Shifty" Sheridan notched his second goal when he made a smart, move, he Oronp Tykes edge first win over Ops crew Orono Tykes saw their first win against Ops in Orono with a victory of 2-1. Orono played a very strong game against an evenly matched team. Scott MacDonàld opened the scoring assisted by our little lady Amanda Haines and B.J. "Smiley" Hackett. Orono went ahead again with a goal by Brett Maartense assisted again bv B.M. "Smilev" circled behind the net and slipped one in before the goalie could cover up. Blaine Souch and Tyler Gibson set the play up with some sharp passing. Matt Stephenson upped the' count to 5-1 Orono at the close of the period when;he slid it in on his backhand after great pressure applied applied by Brian Rodd and Todd Gray who earned the assists. Early in the third period it was Todd Gray poking in Matt Stephenson's Stephenson's rebound after Jeff Hartwig started the play. Newcastle made it 6-2 seconds later when Mike Pearce found the mark with a low slap shot. David Sheridan notched the hat trick at the 4:19 mark when he deflected in Tyler Gibson's wrist shot, Jon Barbeau of Newcastle closed the game out when he beat a sharp Shawn Hardy between the pipes for Orono. Brent Osmond, Mike Goodmur- . phy and Jason Major combined . with Jason Adey and Jeff. Hartwig to anchor a strong defensive effort. Hackett and David Swan. Ops then came back and scoreef their one and only goal by Marty Harrington, unassisted: Paul Dresiinski played a strong game in net. All the players gave their best towards their first victory of the year. The team hopes to see Devon Witheridge return with the blades on real soon. , Tri-County Midgets win over Fenelon Falls On January 16 the Orono Tri- County Midgets travelled to Fenelon Falls to play a game. The Orono boys were tViumphant- as they came home with a 4-2 victory. Orono Holiday Juice 5 - Manvers 0 On January 5th, Orono took to the ice in Manvers for a 5:00 p.m. game. When all the smoke had cleared away Orono came home with their first win in five games. Orono opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by David Crozier assisted by Jeff Goodmur- phy. Our second goal of the period came at 2:20 on a pass, from Richard and David Crozier to Jeff Goodmurphy. Our lone second period goal went to Steven Sargent unassisted. David Crozier assisted by Jeff Goodmurphy got our scoring scoring under way for the third period. With three minutes left in the period Jeff Goodmurphy netted another one this time assisted by Richard Crozier and Steven Sargent. Earning the shutout in the Orono. nets was Bryan Haines. Excellent Excellent team effort by - Scott Ransberry, Jonathan Burnham, Owen Taylor, Simon Weagant, Gordon Wilkinson, Sommer West and Jason Lawrence. "Way to go Jeff on your four-pointer!" Soon, you could be leaving us and going on to the big times if Harold should phone you. I imagine those points look awfully impressive to him. Millbrook I 3 - Orono Holiday Juice "B" 1 Here it is Monday night January 6th and its novice Hockey Night in Millbrook so here we (Orono) are back on the road again. Hurry to the areria, get them dressed quickly and then out to the stands to get in tune for the cheering, boy this sure is the life,- such excitement. Finally the puck is dropped and now here we go. Orono starts out with some very good shots on net but is just not ab|e to make good. We see some good end-to-end rushes and a number of good saves by goaltender Jeff Goodmurphy, Millbrook opens the scoring at the 3:50 mark of the first, Orono puts the pressure on and ties it up at 2:14 on a goal by David Crozier assisted by Richard Crozier.
