While many people are not successful on their first attempts to quit, the following basic principles are important to any smoking cessation effort. DESIRE The smoker must be motivated motivated to quit. This is the single most important factor since quitting is a difficult challenge which can last for several months. SEE YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR ■ Your family physician can make the difference between success or failure in the quitting process; often he can help you develop your own smoking cessation program. Recent studies studies have shown that the success rate, is doubled when physicians prescribe NICORETTE, a nicotine nicotine chewing gum, in conjunc- .' tion with on-going patient follow up. AVOIDANCE Avoid situations conducive fo smoking such as drinking, playing cards, and watching TV. It is' especially important to avoid these activities during the initial and most difficult period of withdrawal. After the first couple of weeks, the need won't be as great. SUBSTITUTIONS , Take up a hobby that requires concentration or increased ac- tivitÿ to take your mind off cigarettes. Try-jogging, gardening gardening or painting. Focus your mind on morepleasant activities ajBmijH during times when you may be tempted to smoke. DEPRIVATION ■ Don't deprive yourself. Continue Continue eating normally, and start ■ an exercise program to help you avoid weight gain. Do not substitute food when you desire a cigarette. Keep a supply of low-calorie snacks nearby so that if you must eat something, ' you will be eating sensibly. Carrot and celery sticks, sugarless sugarless gum and skim milk are used \ by many smokers trying to quit, j IMAGING j. Associate smoking with blackened lungs, or create positive positive self-images of yourself as an ex-smoker -- healthy, active, easy-breathing. INTERIOR DIALOGUE When temptation strikes, identify the cause. Many smokers smokers automatically reach for a cigarette without thinking the > situation through. Try to find another way to cope with the situation that is making you desire a cigarette. MANAGING FAILURE Don't be discouraged if you give into temptation. The difference difference between those who eventually eventually stop smoking and those who don't, is often their ability to learn from failure. Remember, Remember, quitting is a process, not an event.
