Sam Cureatz . . . from Queen's Park WAITING AT THE STATION There's been some confusion and contradictory headlines in local newspapers about the extension of GO train service to Oshawa, Much of this confusion js the result ,of changes in the Provincial Government, Government, as well as changes in GO'S policy concerning the type pf rail service to be offered th& Oshawa community. 1 Original plans called for the extension extension of the east-west lakeshore I i.ne, using UTDC designed drivçrless electric cars from the existing existing terminal in' Pickering to Oshawa. The route planned for the UTDC cars would have crossed from the south side of Highway 401 to the north, east of Whitby, and link up alongside the Canadian Pacific Rail lines. This route would have been served by two stations - one ,at Stevenson Road, near Oshawa Cen tre, and at Harmony Road, on the east side of the city. Last June, however, then Transportation Minister George McCague took a second look at this plan and decided it was too expensive. expensive. The UTDC system was scrapped, scrapped, at a saving of $100 million for service to Oshawa, and it was decided decided to run conventional passenger trains from Pickering to Oshawa. This change of plan caused many to fear that GO service to Oshawa would not be completed by the date promised earlier. As well, a new route, running along CNR lines to the south of Oshawa, came into consideration. The new Provincial Government agrees with McCague's policy to extend extend conventional train service to Oshawa and is moving ahead building track on the route already prepared for the UTDC system. This means that GO service Out of JOHN D. HUMPHREYS Q.C. and W. ARLEIGH HILLMAN CLÇ. are pleased to announce that SAM L. In a report to council the department department noted a total of 607 calls to which the department responded in the Brock Street station in Whitby should begin in 1988 - a year earlier than would have been possible using using UTDC equipment. At the same time, the Liberal government has decided to carry out studies to assess the best route beyond Whitby to Oshawa, As far as I am concerned, this is a delay tactic. Since this announcement, funding funding for GO service has become a concern. Regional Chairman Gary Her remd has accused Oshawa Mayor Pilkey and his council of not doing enough to persuade GO to keep 'to the plan for extended rail service to Oshawa and east to the Town of Newcastle. Personally, 1 side with Mayor Pilkey on this issue. The Oshawa council especially "people like Cy Elsey have been pressuring the Province Province for the extension. Now with the delay, Gary has become an apologist for the Liberal Govern-, ment. He, of all people, as a member of the Toronto Area Transit Transit Operating Authority should be able to get a firm time table for the full extension east to Newcastle, Instead Instead we get an attack on local" councils rather than admitting that ■the Liberal Government, of which he is a supporter, secs no points to be gained by extending the line to Conservative and NDP held ridings. Oshawa and Newcastle need the GO service. Gary, ,we will all fare better if we work together on this important issue for our community. community.
