Orono Cubs Pi ne wood Derby 1st Orono Cubs held their pack Pinewood Derby race on Saturday, March 22nd. This event actually got started back about January 27th when the kits were given out. The fathers, in some cases mothers and sons now start thinking thinking of designs, colours and so on for the car. Some will start this project project early, but others who are not wood workers will just keep putting it off hoping that by some form of sheer magic it will transform from a hunk of wood into the prize winning winning car. We had eighteen cubs register their cars ready to race at 10:00 a.m. We raced three heats, then started selecting winners by total number of points' accumulated. Some cars had to be raced again in order to break existing ties. The results for Speed are: 1st Place - Steven Sargent 2nd Place - Michael Smith 3rd Place - Ryan Tomlinson 4th Place - Brian Leach 5t,h Place - Todd Graves 6th Place - Tim Green and Design: 1st Place - Todd Graves 2nd Place - Brian Leach 3rd Place - Tim Green For the leaders race the numbers of the boys cars were put'into a cup, the leaders each drew a number then that was the car you raced. There we were at. the, end of the track cheering our cats to victory, ' only Akela's car did not come down the track, it got sabotaged by the starters big thumb. Bob Goodmur- phy's jalopy just barely squeaked ' past my powerhouse to win the leader's annual trophy. (Continued page 9) Councs. Cowman and Hubbard. To hold two night council meetings Mayor Winters on Monday night cast the deciding vote with the result that the Town as of June 1st will hold all regular council meetings in the evening on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. This differs from the present procedure procedure whereby council meets only on the fçiurth Monday in the evening evening for a council session. The two General Purpose committee committee meetings will continue to be held starting Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. on the first and third Mondays. In supporting the move to two evening meetings Cunc. Harare said they had had requests from both the public and some members of council council for more evening meetings. She said she would support the change to two evening meetings and pointed out that although it was a compromise it still gave interested parties two opportunities, one in the morning and one in the evening to have input to any item on the agenda. , She also stated that the General Purpose committee meetings generally last longer and that they should continue to be held starting in the monring and if necessary continue continue on into the afternoon. Counc. Cowman said the change was long overdue and that she would be supporting the two evening evening meetings. 'Counc. Arnott Wotten said everything had been running well under the present system and he saw no need for change. He said he could see problems for staff having to attend more evening meetings. Counc. Frank Stapleton in speaking speaking to the motion said he would not support the two evening meetings and didn't think it was necessary'to make change. He said he already sat on eleven committees and other sub-committees which meet at night. He also said staff would want to be compensated for the extra evening evening meetings.
