Oakwood win out over Commodore Atoms Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 26,1986-5 Orono Tykes take on mothers for a winner The third game of the final best of five playoff series was probably the most action packed exciting game yet between the Orono Atom Commodores and Oakwood. The game was played in Oakwood on Monday, Match 3, 1,986 and the Commodores again fell behind very early in the game. At the 36 second mark Oakwdod's Ted Ross fired a hard shot from a bad angle that deflected off the Commodore goalie's skate into the net. There were numerous chances at both ends of the ice during the rest of the first period. Of note was a pass by Dan Walters to Chad Puk in front of the net but the Oakwood goalie robbed Chad on his excellent shot. Moments later Jason Mercer was open in front but the puck bounced over his stick as he lined up On an open net. At 1:28 of thé second period Oakwood got a breakaway and the Orono goalie Jarrett Aus made the save, bounced up and stopped the rebound shot but was down when Oakwood took 'the third' shot and scored. The Commodores down now 2-0 continued to press and at the 3:28 mark of the second period Jean-Paul Tousignant passed the puck to Ryan Rock who put the puck away to bring Orono to within one goal. With the Commodores on a power pla\ late in the same period and pressing to tie the score Oakwood intercepted a pass, broke " in clear on the Commodores net and scored on a low hard drive from 10 feet out. At the 3:10 point of the third period Chad Puk dug the puck out of a scramble in front of the Oakwood goal and shovelled it over to Dan Walters who poked the puck into the net to narrow the score to 3-2. The Commodores were skating hard to tie the score through the rest of the period with several chances just missing the mark. With just five seconds remaining the puck was worked to Jean-Paul Toiisig- nant in front of the open side of the Oakwood goal, Jean-Paul fired a backhand shot over a downed . defender only to have the puck graze the crossbar and go over the net. The game ended 3-2 for Oakwood. The Commodores now with their backs to the wall must win the remaining two games to stay alive. iThe fourth game of the series was played in Orono on Friday, March 7th; This game matched the rest in this'series in that it was action packed packed from start to finish. The game was evenly fought through the first period with no scoring bqt an ex- , hibition of fine hockey. Oakwood again took the lead when they '. scored twicë the first at 5:19 and the second at 1:40 of the second period. Orono Commodores continued to battle and succeeded in scoring at the 6:48 mark of the third period when Ryan Rock passed to Greg Hooper who scored the goal. The game and the championship series ended with Oakwood the winner. winner. 1 ATOM EXHIBITION GAME MARCH 21, 1986 Orono II Commodores vs. Orono I Camsports The final game of the 1986 hockey season for the Orono II Atom Commodores was an exhibition exhibition game against Orono 1 Camsports. The game was well played with both sides seemingly enjoying the match. The Commodores opened the scoring at the 6:44 mark of the first 'jod when Neil Haines fed a pass ^ Jean-Paul Tousignant who beat ■the Camsport goalie on the short side. -Play continued with pressure applied in the Camsport zone but good saves by Scott Hall kept the score at 1-0 until there was only two seconds left in the second period. On some good passing Greg Hooper got the puck over to Ryan Rock who fired it home just before the buzzer to make it 2-0 for .the Commodores. Midway through the third period Camsport'notched their only goal when T. Hollowell passed to Brandon Brandon Ovendon who took a low shot that deflected off the Commodore goalie's blocker into the net. The game ended 2-1 for the Commodores. Commodores. The Atom Commodores and their coaching staff should be congratulated congratulated on a fine successful season which produced some very exciting hockey for the spectators and comradery among the team members who all contributed to their success. Orono Tykes ended their hockey season with a mother and son game on Saturday, March 22nd and a game against lake Vista Tykes at the Civic Auditorium on Sunday. The Orono Tykes were winners of both games. The mother & son game proved to be quite humourous and many of the moms showed that they could participate on the ice as well as in the starids. "Boom Boom" Swan and "Fast Moves" Maartense looked looked very professional, while player- coach "E" Haines proved you do not need skates to play ice hockey!
