1 4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 9, 1986 Ganaraska Maple Syrup Day Rain did not hamper activities at the Ganaraska Forest Centre on Saturday as a host of parents and youngsters took advantage of the opportunity to view the sugar maple syrup operation and for a modest price partake of pancakes and syrup. Forest Centre staff conducted tours throughout the morning and into the afternoon while volunteers battered up pancakes topped with maple'syrup. A good'part of those attending w$re young families and great interest interest was shown in the operation which was fully explained by staff. It was reported that sap flow this year is down some fifty percent over that of last year, dite mainly to weather conditions. Guidance Newsletter Clarke High School By Darrel Devolin This week I would like to direct my comments towards awarenëss. The question could be asked, what is your goal in life. Answers that I received recently from three grade tep and eleven classes varied .widely and included such things as happiness, travel, a good job, security, an early retirement, wealth, satisfaction and respect, A report card that 1 received many years ago contained a quote that seemed to sum it up neatly by saying that a life goal might be to bé . PUBLICLY USEFUL AND PRIVATELY HAPPY. It is my belief that efforts made by parents, teachers, counsellors and others that increase student self awareness, educational awareness and job , awareness may help a great deal towards life's goals. Guidance classes and counselling, it} addition to teachers teaching guidance across the curriculum in all subject areas is a part of the Clarke approach. First let me expand on self awareness. Exercises designed to help students identify feelings, values, beliefs, life style, strengths, weaknesses, aptitudes, attitudes, energy levels, skills, temperament and interests to name several, make students more Self aware. Secondly, 1 shall expand on Educational Awareness. Trips to Universities, Community Colleges, Art College, Agricultural Colleges and other institutions of higher learning are arranged and encouraged encouraged for senior students. The use of college and university calendars, calendars, S.G.I.S., Choices, a booklet called Horizons and many other booklets, pamphlets, posters and letters are available in the Guidance Office. In addition, speakers from a variety of post secondary institutions institutions come to the school to speak to interested students. Thirdly, I shall discuss job or career awareness. Summer employment, employment, part time work and the cooperative cooperative education program offer students a good opportunity to try out different types of jobs., A varie- ' ty of speakers have been, and will be, invited into the school to talk to students interested in a certain field. Plans have been made in April, to have an apprenticeship seminar, a legal seminar, an electronics seminar, a job search seminar and a student employment seminar. In summing up, I would like to point out to students and parents that many things are offered that students sometimes do not take full advantage: of. For many seminars the students must sign up in the Guidance Office and lists are published for teachers to excuse these people from class. By doing it this way we get the students to meetings of their interest, but, the responsibility lies with the student to sign up.
