Newcastle committee approves Group home Although opposition was presented to the general purpose committee on Monday for a rezoning rezoning of some 10 acres of land to allow a Group Home in lot 10, concession concession 1, Darlington Township, the members of the committee did give their approval and recommended recommended that council do likewise. Local school board still in opposition The school trustees of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education have fallen in line with other school boards throughout the province in objecting objecting to' the Shapiro recommendations recommendations for provincial funding for private schools. The local trustees debated the 61 recommendations outlined "in the report to the Ontario government by the specially appointed commissioner, commissioner, Bernard Shapiro. 1 Shapiro sets out recommendations recommendations that would provide for the funding of private schools and also outlines ways these schools could be setup and monitored. The area trustees insist that the province must first return their support support to the public educational system to the 60 percent which existed existed during the mid 1970s. The province province has reduced its payment, on average, to some 47 percent. • Board chairman Donna Fairey said trustees are opposed to private ^ school funding just as they were opposed opposed to the extension of funding to the separate school system. The chairman said trustees are concerned that additional governe- rnent funding to any other school system will lead to a waterin down of the public system. Shapiro, since writing the report , has been appointed deputy minister of education in Ontario and Donna Fairey has stated this frightens her to death. She said she fears Shapiro has carried the basic philosophy of support for'private schools into office office with him. * The Northumberland and Newcs- tle trusteesare also opposed to recommendations to allow schools of other religious denominations to enter into agreements to become an "associated school" with the public board.
