4-Qrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 28, 1986 From Around the Region and area Pumping station at Garden Hill pond The Ganaraska Conservation Authority has given approval to the Hope Township Fire Department ■ allowing the department to build a pumping station ramp at Garden , Hill pond. The station will be bujlt on the east side of the pond allowing allowing fire pumpers to . load or gain water for fire purposes in Garden Hill. Oshawa artist's work reproduced 15 million times Sara Tyson, a former Oshawa' native, was the designer of a new 34 cent Canada Post stamp issued on April 14th. The stamp celebrates the life of Molly Brant, an Iroquois woman and dedicated Loyalist who encouraged the tribes of tJreSix Nations Nations to remain loyal to the British. Tyson started her art career at school in Oshawa, later attending the Ontario College of Art.. Her clients include the Financial Post Magazine, CBC Radio, the Toronto Star, Maclean-Hunter and other publications. Not until the 1990's to .Oshawa Gary Herrema, chairman of the Region of Durham states it will not be until the 1900s that- GO transporation system will be extended extended to Oshawa. He.states both the CN and CP are dragging their heels on their proposals proposals for the use of track. Herrema also has been critical of the federal government in their delay in approving approving passenger priority legislation legislation over that of freight. 800 enrolled in Junior Kindergarten Some ,800 four year olds have been enrolled in Junior Kindergarten throughout the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education area and start school this coming September. Junior Kindergarten is now part of the educat ional program in most school areas in the province. The children will attend classes on a half-day basis, the same as regular kindergarten. Win provincial writing award Virginia Campbell, a grade .6 student at the North Hdpe Public School has won the provincial award in the Royal .Canadian Legion literary contest. Virginia's article on Remembrance Remembrance Day Ceremonies at her school in Hope Township will how , compete in the national finals which will be judged n June. Reion to take issue to court The Region of Durham council last week voted to send the issue of ownership of the Regional Headquarters Headquarters in Whitby to court. The issue has been brewing for the past two years. Oshawa claims thirty percent ownership of the building while the Region states a report indicates that lands owned by the former County of Ontario were turned over-to the Region in 1974. . Gary Herrema has said he predicts the Region will be the winners winners and that the courts will give the Region full ownership. A-G's deparfment appeals sentence The sentence of an Oshawa motorist who was convicted of • criminal negligence in the death of a 21-year-old Whitby woman is being appealed by the Attorney-General's department of tjre Province of Ontario. Ontario. Patrick Lenehan, 29, of Oshawa was sentenced in Whitby district court to two years less a day, fined a $1000 and had his licence suspended for five years. The prosecutor said the sentence should have been a five year penitentiary term as well as a lifelong lifelong licence suspension. • Finance committee approves renovations The Regional Finance committee last week gave their stamp of approval approval for a $2.5 million renovation of Fairview Lodge in Whitby. The work is to renovate two. wings of the lodge completely. Approval is still needed from the Social Services pommittee as well as council. The, renovations will alstj include changing .from four-bed rooms to singles and doubles for extended care patients. The study will attempt to solve increasing levels of conflict between ■ user groups, caused by increased recreation';,i use of the forest. The present management plan was prepared in 1980 which recommends recommends a review every five years. GRCA member Matthew Currel- ly noted few problems arise from some conflicting uses while others cause nothing but trouble. He said snowmobilers and skiers live in relative harmony in the forest. "I, as a taxpayer, fee! that everyone should have use of the forest, stated Garry Houston, chairman of the Authority. Expect to adopt 911 number for Region Durham Region may adopt the 911 emergency number as early as 1987 following a special committee report which is expected later this year. The chairman of the Region states he would hope that the 911 number could be in use within the Region in 1987 but it carries a bill of $1 million. The number would be used to contact fire, police and ambulance. Would take over Newcastle RC schools The Durham Region Separate School Board has voted to take over jurisdiction of three schools in the Town of Newcstle operated by the Peterbor o u g h- Vict or i a - Northumberland and Newcastle Separate School board. The Durham Region board also is to permit Newcastle RC students to attend the Durham Board school at no charge. in the past the PVNN board had paid tuition for RC students attending attending the Durham Board schools but this year are closing out' such tuition payments. • Most of the students affected live in the Courtice area.
