Starting in July, the centre is going going to introduce a new aspect to it's pre-employment training program by inviting seniors from the community community to act as potential employers. Employers have trouble sparing enough time to volunteer their services, services, Colleen ' Bell the Pickering centre's director says. The seniors have time, and are more than willing willing to pass on their experience. Bell also hopes it will reduce the generation gap. "With the help of seniors, the young people can learn to deal with any negative attitudes- they may have towards anyone over the age of 25," The centre's main function is to help hard-to-employ youths find a job. The Durham centre is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Skills Development to work with young people between the ages of 15 and 24. In Durham, an individual who comes to the centre for help will first be interviewed by the counsellor. The client's background, such as family history, income, and education are looked at to get the whole picture. The counsellor can then determine . person's specific needs and ensure that they receive the appropriate services. In the one-on-one sessions, the counsellor will go over resumes and job interviews, and try to build up the client's self-confidence. "When we do group sessions I really don't like more than ten or 12 people, because then it becomes too unwieldly, and someone's going to miss out," she said. "Building a rapport with kids is important. A lot of times you're going going to have to tell them to cut their hair and that's a personal issue. But they get to know you and they feel they can trust you. The centre has three types of group workshops. Pre-employment - training, is where the senior's will be working. It is designed to hèlp hard-to-employ youth learn the life skills arid job attitudes that will help them at the workplace. Another group workshop focuses in on job maintenance. "Most clients are unable to keep a job, we want to maximize their chances for success," Bell said. The workshops are not lectures, we try to make them fun, she said. The centre created it's own versions of popular board games to teach clients job safety and realistic job expectations. These workshops are not lectures, lectures, we try to make them fun, she said. The centre created it's own versions of popular board games to teach clients job safety and realistic job expectations. These workshops are spaced over the placement period. "When you're going over common work problems, it's a little more practical for them to be able to say, 'I did have that problem and I didn't know what to do', sahe said.. The centre's job market workshops are a general service to the community. Originally a pilot project set up for the Drhhm Board of Education last year, the centre went into the schools to meet with potential drop-outs, armed, with a workshop specifically for them. They were told the prerequisites for employment in are jobs, job market trends, and the alternatives to employment: welfare and unemployment insurance. "They were not presented in a terribly, positive light. It's, been very suc cessful as a preventative measure," Bell said. The centre places young people into jobs through the provinces Futures program, but it also en- crouages it's clients tp go directly, into the community to find work.
