Joint committee would share provincial monies A joint Region of Durham committee committee of public works and finance will recommend to the Regional council that provincial grants for water systems in small communities be shared between the Region and the affected property owners. Prior to the joint meeting of the two committees the public works committee had suggested that provincial provincial grants be used to the benefit of the affected property owners. The province of Ontario does make funding available to small communities where wells are polluted and a municipal system is installed. The grant has been set at sixty percent. At the present time the Durham policy would have all monies from the province go to the Region and with no benefit to the property owners. The joint committee report goes before council this coming week for its consideration. In the case of Newtonville where a communal water system is estimated to cost $1.4 million the province would contribute $582,480, the Region $574,544 and the property owners $190,476 in frontage charges and $71,500 in connection charges. These costs are based on the policy as recommended recommended by the Regional joint committee. It has been reported that under the present system the- cost to property property owners would be some $650,000. Tom Edwards, a Whitby councillor councillor on the committee, spoke out in favour of compulsory vaccination vaccination for rabies and said the municipalities should be positive on this issue. He said it was a matter of public safety. It was pointed out that compulsory compulsory vaccination could cost the Region upwards of $100,000.
