No. A1630 At the annual meeting of the Durham Region Health Council Jean Achmhtowicz, chairman, stated that more than $5 million worth of new or expanded health care programs had been approved by the province for the Region of Durham. She said the organization was delighted that the buoyant economy economy had resulted in increased allocations, during the past year, in all areas of health care services in Durham. She also said they were particularly pleased with the minister of health's recognition that Durham was a high growth area, She said several new or expanded expanded hospital, public health, ' mental health, emergency aqd co-ordination services have all . been approved on the recom- méndations of the local health council. The chairman said the programs programs will add more than $5 million to annual operating costs of the health care system in Durham. She said the annual estimated cost of health care services in Durham has reached $200 million. Some of the programs approved approved include a major expansion expansion to Ajax-Pickering Hospital, providing more maternity, medical-surgical and chronic care beds at Bowmanville Bowmanville Memorial Hospital, expansion expansion of ambulance services in Oshawa and Pickering, as well as an evalutaion of Oshawa's paramedic program, a regional genetic" screening and counselling counselling program at Oshawa General Hospital, education and support support programs for Alzheimer's disease, a district sexual assault program as well as additiona extended-care beds in Osh'awa and Ajax-Pickering. Jean Achmatowicz sai<ji the many projects approved by the province in the last year show the health council is successful in what it does - assessing the health care needs of the com munity, planning, a coordinated coordinated approach to those needs and adyising the ministry of health of required changes.
