Ontario To Provide Stabilization Payment For Corn and Soybeans Ontario corn and soybean growers will receive an interim payment payment for the 1985-86 stabilization year through the Farm Income Stabilization Commission. The payments of $9 per tonne for soybeans and $3.50 per tonne for corn will be made on sales recorded by the Ontario Soybean Producers Marketing Board and the Ontario Corn Producers Association, from September 1, 1985 to March 31, 1986 inclusive. Producers registered in the 1985 Grain Plan offered by the Farm Income Income Stabilization Commission are eligible for the payment. In the case of soybeans, the interim interim payment represents the Ontario Ontario government's portion of the stabilization program. The participating participating grower's fee of $4.50 will be retained in the account for credit purposes for 1986-87 sales year registration. The interim payment of $3.50 for corn represents 75 per cent of the Ontario government's share of the program. The payment is being made at this level because under the corn stabilization program, deductions deductions are made for any feed grain purchased by the participant. Final adjustments will be made at the end of the 1985-86 sales year. As in soybeans, the deposit fees for the corn program will be retained retained in the account for the final adjustments adjustments and for registration for the 1986-87 program. Sales data required to process the payments to producers will be provided provided to the commission by the soybean soybean board and the corn prodcuers' association to help speed payments to producers. The Farm Income Stabilization Commission plans for corn and soybeans provide producers with support of between 90 and 95 per cent of the five-year average price of the commodity with adjustments for cash costs. Fisheries Studies on Balsam Lake Dave Maraldo Kawartha Lakes Fisheries Biologist This season the Kawartha Lakes Fisheries Assessment Unit has been conducting three major studies on Balsam Lake. These projects, • yellow pickerel tagging at Coboconk, index trap netting, and creel survey, provide valuable information information for fisheries managers on the fish community in the lake. During April, two fisheries technicians tagged 440 yellow pickerel (or walleye) on their spawning run to Coboconk. Fish were measured, weighed and then tagged with a small, yellow, numbered disk on their back in front of the dorsSl fin. Recaptures of tagged fish provide data about movements of yellow pickerel around the lake. Anglers are asked to report to the Lindsay district office office the tag number, location, and-; size of any tagged fish they catch. ' When they do, they will be helping local fisheries managers, and will fee provided with a letter from the ministry indicating where'their fish was tagged and its age. In addition, their name will be entered, into a Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 16, 1986-13 draw for three fishing tacite prizes awarded at the end of t#Bthing season. ' ' Index trap netting tooIRMjacc from May 6th to 2?th this year. A total of 9,575 fish were caught and released during this period. Approximately Approximately 30 percent of these fish were sampled for biological data. This information is analyzed and compared to previous years to monitor changes occurring in the fish stocks. The creel survey is where many anglers meet Ministry of Natural Resources employees on the lake. The survey crew counts the number of boats in which people are fishing, and then interviews a sample sample of the anglers. Information sought from anglers includes the number of hours fished, the number of fish caught, their place of residence, and the type of accommodation accommodation they, are using. Their catch may also be sampled to determine determine the size and age of fish being harvested. This information constitutes constitutes a statistical sample from which estimates, of total fishing pressure" (number of , hours) and harvest can be calculated. Anglers are encouraged to help. with these programs by providing accurate information whenever possible. Remember, your information information is used to assess the status of the fishery. Anglers Fined $10,000 Jim Milford . Conservation Officer Coordinator Six King City area residents were fined a total of $10,000 in Peterborough Peterborough Provincial court for violations violations of the Game and Fish Act. Lindsay district Conservation Officers,, Officers,, working on a tip from a concerned concerned citizen, checked six anglers on the Otonabee River south of Peterborough on May 13, 1986. A search of a motorhome, parked near Campbelltown, turned up 161 pickerel, 125 over the legal limit. At the time of the investigation some of the pickerel were being cleaned, and during a thorough search of the motorhome the officers discovered frozen fillets hidden under mattresses. All six persons were placed on probation for two years with the condition they cannot fish anywhere in Ontario during the probation period. €L* HARVEY PARTNER & SONS PLUMBING and HÉATING MAY TAG DEALER PROFESSIOMAL GOULD'S PUMP DEALER «■ AUTHORIZED CONSUMER GAS DEALER OIL - WOOD - ELECTRIC 'REPAIRS TO ALL MAKES ORONO, ONTARIÇ 883-5206 or 623-2301 8
