Off to the races Come hell or high water, success or failure its off to the piglet races come Thursday evening. To bring you up to date training started last Thursday at noon when myself along with Janette Desousa and Ann Dreslinski opened the racing racing stable for the first session with the piglets. Well Janette almost touched one of the piglets and it was hand-off as far as Ann was concerned. It didn't take long to realize we were in trouble as confidence in my two companions to succeed with this chore was somewhat slim. I was quick to pick up on an offer by Lynn Finley that her husband John could train the piglet with no trouble. Why not go to the top of the heap for John is Agricultural Representative for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Durham East and if John could solve all the farmers' problems then this should be a cinch. John has been patient, the piglets co-operative and as well showing a good degree of intelligence. With a pocket full of Oreo cookies John states without hesitation in his mild, calm manner and wearing a smile, "We'll be ready". This assurance didn't come that easy because the piglets began jumping jumping the rail necessitating higher rajls and to stop them rooting in the sod the track itself had to be covered over with sand. Orono Weekly You can add to this the piglets arc gaining a pound a day even urider rigid training and if the fair was even a week later a new starting gate would, have to be assembled. Its not only John that has been drawn into the event for we had to look for help from Bill Bunting and our son-in-law, Jim Wright, for the construction of the starting gate, raceway rail, painting and construction construction of the compound. Lynn Finley is making racing colours for the piglets and Ann Dreslinski is looking looking after cheerleading pompoms, streamers and prizes for the winh- Times, Wednesday, September 3, 1986-3 ing teams of kids. There still are some finishing touches but we will leave that until the day of the opening of the fair. To this point we have had a lot of fun and taken a lot of kidding. There are sceptics amongst us but the piglet team in Orono is determined determined to conquer all. I must say I do appreciate and have enjoyed the co-operation I , have received in this venture. We shall determine the championship championship piglet over the period of •the fair who receives a case of Oreo cookies.
