The answer is 'No' for waste site from Tyrone Three hundred and fifty voices were unanimous in their unqualified unqualified opposition to a possible low-level nuclear waste site in their community at a meeting held in Tyrone last Wednesday evening. "Whether it's safe or not, we just plain don't want this", stated Counc. Hamre, who, with the statement, statement, voced the opinion of those in attendance at the meeting. The meeting was well conducted by Lou Stavrakos, who recently moved into the Tyrone area from Toronto and whose property lies just north of,the possible■ Tyrone site for the nuclear waste site. He said "I don't care what physicists or geologists say, I don't want it." Stavrakos outlined the purpose of the meeting which was to appoint a committee of some eight to ten people to organize opposition against the objects of Eldorado Resources Ltd. and to call upon help from all the citizens of the area and to speak out on their behalf. He spoke of grouping together with the Port Granny Monitoring Committee, Committee, the Starkville group and any other-possible groups opposing the choice of sites in the'area. Fié said any such dump could become the site for aH nuclear material across Canada. John Veldhuis, chairman of the Port Granby Monitoring Committee, Committee, outlined the objectives of the committee. He said in the 1950s Eldorado commenced dumping waste at Port Granby next to Lake Ontario. This waste now leaks into the Lake, stated Veldhuis. He said * both the Town of Newcastle and the Region of Durham was on record as opposing the dumping of tow level waste within the borders of the Region of Durham. He further stated there was no difference difference in dumping the waste at Port Granby to that proposed in the Tyrone area. Counc. Flarrire said that since , April two representatives from Hope, two from the Town of Newcastle and two from the Region had been meeting compiling a list of concerns over possiblt dumping of. nuclear waste in the Hope or Region of Durham, She said they had been advised not to make these " concerns known until such time as Eldorado had outline possible sites.
