These workshops focus on wellness and individual Health Care Assessment. Assessment. The paramaters of normal health are incorporated into the process of obtaining a health history and performing a physical examination. Within this framework of health assessment, emphasis is placed on early detection detection of change in health. The resource person for this workshop is Shelley Aubry, R.N., B.ScN., a Registered Nurse graduate from the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing. Martin addressing a meeting of the Natural Resources Advisory Board of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority outlined the co m i n u ed i inport an ce of implementation of conservation measures» In his address he briefly discussed the natural succession of a forest community in southern Ontario and * reviewed the history of land use in th*e Ganaraska area which lead to the formation of the County Forests in the early 1940s. He pointed to the establishment of the forests in the Ganaraska to stabilize erosion process in the blowsands of the area. Dr. Martin expressed some concerns concerns with modern day farm operations operations which in many cases has seen the elimination of fence rows to accommodate accommodate a .more s economical operation. He said such removal has exposed open fields to wind erosion erosion and as well destroyed valuable wildlife habitat. He gained the interest of his audience audience with a- display of photographs of lands experiencing erosion from wind and rain in Hamilton, Cavan* and Hope townships. He then provided more severe problems of erosion currently currently being experienced in southwestern southwestern Ontario and in the Midwestern Midwestern United States. He concluded his address expounding expounding on the benefits of maintaining maintaining windbreaks and forest cover on agricultural lands. . Neil Moore, Soils Conservation Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agricutlure and Food also ad- - dressed the meeting outlining three major programs to address soil erosion erosion problems in flip province.» These included technical advisory service, construction of demonstration demonstration projects and financial incentive programs for structural erosion control measures. Moore said erosion causes depreciation of land values by contributing contributing to nutrient deficiencies. He said in some areas the Conservation Conservation Authorities had worked hand-in-hand with the. Ministry of Agriculture and F.ood in the, delivery of soil conservation programs programs with the authorities often acting acting as contractors for the actual projects. He also pointed out that some new forms of farm machinery had been developed to minimize erosion but that in fact the larger manufactures manufactures of farm'machinery had shied away from development of such machinery. ' Moore stated that Conservation Authority funding has in late years been directed more to flooding, stormwater management and conservation conservation areas with the result that agriculture and soil erosion has become less of a priority. The Ministry of Agriculture, he said, has become more involved in erosion erosion of farm lands. At the end of his topic Moore referred to a new joint provincial and federal program, Soil and Water Environmental Enhancement Enhancement Program, which he expects to be introduced within the next year. He said the program will be focused on a watershed basis and provide the mechanism for examining and developing new techniques for soil conservation. He said the decision was largely due to his representation to the federal government to have this resolved as quickly as possible. Lawrence said he still held a firm view that no such facility should be constructed in this area or in any area close to Lake Ontario, or with a growing population density or on agricultural lands. Open House for Fire Prevention The Town of Newcastle has approved approved the week of October 6th to 11th as Eire Prevention Week and gave approval to a program of events to be undertaken by the Town's fire department. An Open House is to be held at the Bowmanville Fire Station and will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily during the week. Fire Chief Jim Aldridge also stated that a display will be erected at the Bowmanville Mall and manned by Week local firefighters. On ■ answering a question of .Counc. Harare as to Open Houses in other fire halls in the Town Fire Chief Aldridge said it was a matter of being able to have firefighters available to man any Open House at the other stations. He assured Counc. Harare that a number of schools outside of Bowmanville had already made arrangements to visit the Bowmanville Hall during the period of the Open House.
