It contained little to surprise the general public in its content. One could ask where the commitment for jobs was or the commitment to acid rain or where even enthusiasm was displayed. Of interest out of Ottawa has to be the promise of personal income income tax reform. Such has, in the past been the death knell of numerous finance ministers, but Michael Wilson seems to be determined determined especially after the. change that has been undertaken in the United States. • A simpler tax system surely would be a Welcomed note for all Canadians but it would mean the elimination of a whole list of exemptions exemptions which put Allan Macheran behind the eight ball some years ago. ■ What has been said in recent months is a lowering of the personal personal income tax rate with lost revenue then to come from, tiie corporate corporate sector. This could well reduce the income tax levy but in the end the increased cost to the corporations and industry would only be passed along to the taxpayers in greater costs for goods and service service along with an additional mark-up edge. The introduction of the added value sales tax, as a new invention invention for the federal government, could be another bonanza for an increase increase in revenue. It has been written that every form of government would welcome such à source of funds. The rate would be lower than the present federal sales tax levy but is taken at every opportunity when value is added to the product. No doubt any government would be glad to cover up their source of revenue but in the end the taxpayer pays one way or another. Not so long ago the federal government in assisting the wheat farmers of western Canada levied a higher Canadian price for wheat rather than provide subsidies. The cost of assitance comes directly from the consumer rather than going through the government. Any change in the income tax system will be noted with interest. interest. this typical? After all the July storm in council over the appearance of the Liberty Street entrance into Bowman ville from 401 highway the matter matter dismally wilted on Monday through an apparent lack of enthusiasm enthusiasm on the part of council. A public works recommendation to have beautification and plantings undertaken stirred not interest at all from members of council other than to receive the report for information. Certainly it is not a controversial item, nor an exceedingly expensive expensive item. Protest to Port Granby (Continued from page 1) centres and had further said that the federal government did carry some of the responsibility and shoulij be showing leadership. Helpard said he would do What he had to do to stop the dump . He called Allan Lawrence a lamb duck stating he (Lawrence) couldn't get elected in Tyrone or Orono even for dog catcher. Eldorado officials were present at the Port Granby site for their Open House. Dr. Duncan Moffett stated that moving the waste to either Tyrone or Wesleyville would be safe. He insisted the geology was good enough to contain the waste Kendal News Now Thank We All Our God Now thank we air our God with hearth and hands, and voices, who wondrous things hath done, in whom his world rejoices; who fromour mother's,arms hath blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, * and still is ours today. Martin Rinckart (1586-1649) On Thanksgiving in many a home the table will be extended to accommodate accommodate visiting relatives and friends.- It's snowy white surface' will hold a bountiful array of food. But before the guests are invited to eat; the head of the house, as may be his custom throughout the years, will ask the blessing for the food before them. Many families cherish the daily custom of saying grace at meals. It is as someone once said, "the sale that adds flavour to the plainest t for a thousand years or forever. Moffett also said that the eroding lake bank at Port Granby requited that the waste be moved. He said waste at Port Granby could be exposed exposed through the erosion within twenty years. Moffet said the site had no significant effect on the Lake at the present time. The ministers of the area presented a statement of concern calling for God to direct all to a rep- sonsible solution for the disposal of nuclear Waste. The statement said, "We share in theyanguish and fear of our people and those everywhere Whose health and lives are threatened,by threatened,by the problem of nuclear waste. David McKinnell of the Enniskillen-Tyrone Pastoral charge lead the audience in prayer at the close of the demonstration. fare". A very old custom, the giving giving of thanks is common in some form or another to people . everywhere. The earliest example of grace before meals among the jews occurred occurred when the sacrificial feast was delayed until Samuel came to "bless the sacrifice" (1 Samuel 9:13). The first Christian grace was said by Christ when he blessed the loaves and fishes at the feeding of the five thousand. At the family table the father or mother may ask the blessing with these words. Bless us O Lord and these Tlty gifts which we are about to receive. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen. At our ladies meeting when we are gathered around the large table we sing. Be present at our table, Lord, Be here and everywhere adored; These mercies bless and .grant that we May feast in Paradise with Thee. In some families the honour of Saying grace falls to the youngest child. A simple grace expresses a child's happy gratitude. We thank Thee for the food we eat; ' . We thank Thee for the flowers sweet; We thank Thee for the birds that sing; We thank Thee Lord for everything. A popular school grave is 'For what we are aoout to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful. A clergyman's little daughter, accustomed accustomed to having the Bishop visit addressed him as "My Lord". When the Archbishop was to pay a visit her father told her to say, "Your Grace" the proper title for an Archbishop. The gentleman arrived, arrived, smiled in his fatherly way and said, "What a dear little girl. May I give you a kiss?" Remembering her father's instructions instructions the child dutifully, folded her hands, closed her eyes and said: "For what we are about to receive The custom of saying please and thank you at meals is one that parents wish to instill in their children while they are young. And grace, after all, is really just a larger please and thank you addressed to Him Who provided the meal. Like prayer though, grace can and should reach beyond selfishness to include the wants of others. Most of us love the grace that was said at our parents table. It seemed to add to the dignity and stature of family life. Grant us good hearts that we may share They bounty with men everywhere. A gentleman told me that when he was a boy on the prairie during the 'dirty thirties' they had no money to buy meat but they had raised a large flock of chickens. So they had had chicken till he was sick and tired of chicken. When Thanksgiving came his day said, "Why spend the money on a turkey? We'll just have one of our roosters," After the grace Dad said, "each one tell something they are thankful for. We'll begin with you, Bill". I said, "I don't think I have much to . be thankful for, just chicken." His dad jumped up like a flash and 1 turned off the electric lights, took the old coaloil lamp down off the shelf, with the oil that had Sat in it for months, lit it and put it in the centre of the table there it sputtered all evening giving a smoky yellow light as we ate. The fall before they had put in the hydro their only luxury. "I'll never forget that Thanksgiving nor the lesson Dad taught me," he said. On Sunday morning October the first we had a fine lot of children and teachers. The choir sang, "Leaning on the everlasting arms. The ceremony of installing the teachers was conducted by Rev.
