Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 8, 1986-3 Mr. Versluis of Whitby was the guest speaker at the recent Orono Horticultural Society show and meeting. He was introduced by Mr. C. Mostert (right). versluis spoke on the care of houseplants, cacti and succulents. A welcome to F all by George, Orono Estates By George Summer has gone, (1 missed it, for I was out of town that day!!) but by the grace of God and the permission of our good friend Roy Forrester, I hope to either entertain, , annoy, or enlighten you of current events (as I see them) that have taken place since I "talked" to you last spring. First of all 1 trust you all had a reasonably good summer (under the circumstances) personally, personally, I had visitors from England - (George and Irene). I hasten to add that doesn't mean 1 didn't have a good summer because I love to see them (especially as Irene is my wife's sister)!! However I have read several articles articles in which Canadians overseas have voiced their opinions of England, so I think it might be a refreshing change, to hear what (at least two) English visitors think of our cpun(ry, so I asked Irene to give me (heir impression's of Canada, and especially Orono. Being a tactful tactful woman, she never answered this request specifically, but considering this was her fifth or sixth visit (I've lost count) I figure it can't, be too bad "oyer, here",-in fact I think she is already started saving for her next visit. They seem particularly impressed with our "free and easy" lifestyle (her remark - not mine) and •the friendliness of the people, not only our neighbours, who they thought were wonderful, but sales people in the stores, waitresses in restaurants, and just people on the streets, who smile and say "Htf', ipér npêr BARINA HOMECHECK Going Away? Personally--apparently this doesn't happen in London. They were not overly impressed with our T.V. programs (come to think of it, neither am I). But they seemed to think that our village was pretty darned good. They liked the stores, and the friendly people who . work in them. As usual, I heartily endorse these sentiments. They thought our cars and highways were very good,--at pome, the cardinals and blue jays on my lawn seem to give them 'endless pleasure, and "'Charlie" the chipmunk who ate his sunflower 1 seeds right on the patio table in front of them, while my wife stroke him, completely fascinated them. George couldn't find^ a thing wrong'with his Molson Ex. and Irene told me (many times) that I mix a pretty good whiskey sour. They travelled around fairly extensively extensively and seemed delighted at the way we do things. For instance, they were quite impressed with our Canada Day celebrations (we were in Cullen Gardens) and after dark ( the firework display, and the mass spontaneous singirig of our national anthem, was really an excellent example example of what a great country this is. I don't think they will forget Car- ribana Week in Port Perry, for a long time to come, and 1 hope and believe that our image will be enhanced when they talk, and show photographs to their friends back home. As the signs on Main St. say "Orono is a Good Place To Live"--How true. To illustrate this point I will say, that recently my xyife had an operation operation on her foot, and since then my house has been like Grand Central Station-visitors coming in every day and 1 thank every one of them, (it makes me realize, once again, how very lucky 1 am) we thank them for the flowers, cards, gifts, and most of all for their thoughts and concern. So for now* "Welcome to Fall" (it can't be any worse than this past summer.)' He and his family operate a greenhouseand nursery in the Whitby Whitby area. The Town of Newcastle council has been asked to meet with the Region of Durham Works Department Department to consider alternatives for garbage disposal as a result of the Darlington Landfill site reaching its capacity in September of 1987. According to Counc. Hamre there are a number of options to consider from setting up â transfer station for the Town's collected waste, trucking to the Metro site or negotiating with Regional Reclaimers to make use of their facility in the Town of Newcastle. • The correspondence with the Region over the matter was directed by Mayor Winters. Beautification pian wilts The General Purpose committee of the Town of Newcastle took no action as to a beautification scheme presented to the committee by the Public works department. What was a hot issue earlier this year, the beautification of the Liberty Street intersection with Highway 401, wilted when the report was received with no action. Public Works' had negotiated with the lyiinistry of Tranpsortation and Communication over the plan and had submitted their recommendation recommendation that Kampstra Nurseries carry out the work of the beautification plan. The department department would have maintained the works when completed. OBITUARY H. ETHELDA WILLIAMSON At her home in London on September 24, 1986. Wife of the late Edmund ' J. Williamson.
