Signs, painted faces of children were all the order of the day at the gate of the Port Granby waste site in the Town of Newcastle. Department concerned with excessive estate lots The Planning Department through a report by the director of planning, Terry Edwards, to the Town of Newcastle on Monday drew attention to concerns by the department as to the number of estate residential developments being being sought throughout the municipality. Edwards stated six proposals now before the department propose the creation of 229 estate residential lots.. He said there already are 14 registered plans of estate residential plans with a total of 216 lots of which 104 are still Vacant. ■ The' report also made note of a further two plans of 34 lots. When a vote was taken as to the membership of SEAP it resulted in a tie at the meeting to be broken by the chairman who supported SEAP having representation in the Umbrella Umbrella committee. A move to send the issue back to council was easily defeated. The SEAP organization was formed in the 1970s when the Port Granby community was fighting the intent by Eldorado to build a plant in the Port Granby area. John Velhuis said membership included some fifty who did live outside the municipality. The chairman and the finance committee chairman, Jasper holiday holiday are to meet to setforth a financial financial budget for the various commit- *ees of the Umbrella organization. V was pointed out that $5,000 had ""'Been granted by the Town which funds will be paid out by the^Town - on recommendation of the limited had been given. He said there was other criteria setforth as to the use of agricultural lands and other criteria but if the Ministry of Food and Agriculture do not object no action is taken on other criteria. Edwards also stated that estate residential wàs a source of revenue but on the other hand costs of services services could well result from such developments which lie outside more urban areas where services are available. Edwards also said lots in estate residential were cheaper than those developed in sub-division and tend to direct development from the urban urban areas where sub-divisions and services have been put in place. Counc. Hubbard and Terry Edwards Edwards are to arrange a meeting of council members to further, discuss the concerns as expressed in the planning report to committee. organization. Sam Cureatz ' attended the meeting and- in addressing the meeting pointed to the action he, had taken to date in corresponding , with both ministers of the federal government and the provincial government. Cureatz suggested he meet on a monthly basis with the committee and that Howard Sheppard should be included as well as Allan Lawrence. The Umbrella organization gave approval to have representation present at a possible forum being planned by the Clarke High School Parent organization relating to Eldorado's proposal.
