Heating with wood It's fall, and time to think about turning the heat on. Heating a home today can be very expensive. Supplementing your heating system with wood can be an effective way to reduce your fuel bill. There are many advantages in burning wbod: It is a renewable resource. When wood. is used to supplement your heating requirements, requirements, there is a reduction in the amount of non-renewable resources used such as gas and oil. Wood is a clean and safe'fuel if used used properly., " One of the major concerns when . burning fuelwood is the buil(I-up of creosote in the chimney. Consider the following for reducing or preventihg creosote formation. Use well-seasoned hardwood; most species require 9 to 12 months to season thoroughly. Burn dry wood in a small, hot fire instead of a large smouldering.fire. If possible, use a short stove pipe leading to the chimney, and minimize the use of elbows which affect draft. Use flue- lined chimneys where possible and C.S.A. approved wood stoves and heaters. Inspect your chimney and stove pipes regularly and remove creosote and soot if present. It is also important to know and understand the units of measure when purchasing or selling fuelwood. A standard cord of wood has a volume of 128 cubic feet, measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet wide and 8 feet long, consisting of wood, bark and air space. Approximately 85 cubic feet is solid wood. Fuelwood is often sold in smaller units such as face cords or portions of a full cord. Be sure you know what portion of the cord you are buying to get full value for your money. The pricç will vary depeh- ding on the type and volume of wood being sold. ■ If you have a woodlot and want advice or assistance on how to manage it for fuelwood, or you wish to purchase fuelwood, contact the nearest Ministry of Natural Resources office in your area for more information. ' one of CuumU' g best op 2SiS3*. «v > TRUEMAN * mmmmxs wm mm&x. saws TAW A -- This city has changed ce the last time my wife and 1 ;d here in the late 60's.,And it has tnged enormously since 1 first ;d here in the early'50's. Some of change is physical. The. place ; grown a good deal and the old /line has disappeared. The shops I restaurants are more sophisti- ed. And the National Capital mmission has tamed and consoli-- :ed more green space, so that al- >st the entire capital area is in a rk-like setting. * But the major change in Ottawa the last 20 or 30 years is not phy- al at all. It is cultural and linguis- . In some Anglo quarters, the ancophone invasion is resented, iderstandably, the sudden chang- ; of the rules has angered a lot of ilingual civil servants whose reers have been arrested, or even ded. But for those wh,q,_ believe that mehow the "two solitudes" must breached if this country is to sur- /e, the capital's bilingualism is mehow comforting. So are the federal office complexes which .n large across the river on the jll skyline. Les Terrasses de la taudiere and Place du Portagq are lysical reminders of the fact that ings are different. In the old days, :tawa's Anglos vièwed Hull as a place t.o carouse long after the sidewalks sidewalks in the.capital had been rolled up for the night. They still take advantage advantage of Quebec's more liberal liquor laws, hut they also go to Hull thtfse days for subtle French cooking. cooking. Some Francophone Quebeckers resent our invasion of Hull the wav some Anglos resent their invasion? of Ottawa. We hav e not just shared the wealth with Hull. We have sent thousands of English-speaking civil. servants there to earn their livings • and in so doing, we^have te'nded to Anglicize a French-speaking com- potjrjd. Understandably, this is disappointing disappointing for federal civil servants and politicians from Quebec who valued Hull as a Francophone refuge refuge from the majority culture. When you think about it, it would not be surprising if some Quebeckers Quebeckers feel more deeply about what has happened to Hull than diehard diehard Anglophones feel about what has happened to Ottawa. We are threatening their culture. They are not threatening ours. It is well-meaning Americans who unwittingly are threatening to engulf engulf the Anglo culture. And in two years twre 1 have come to feel that Quebec might soon represent the only distinctive Canadian flavour,.
