The bottom third of the goats were culled each year, he said. He said the goats are not allowed out to pasture but remain in controlled controlled management within the barn. Ernie notes that a great deal of information was gleaned from cattle cattle operations. He also used information information from the U.S. and Canadian Canadian Departments of Agriculture and said this information is free and most useful. "It made a lot of sense tome". Ernie said it was interesting that 'he learned Nuns in Quebec, who are also having great success, maintaiji many of the procedures which fié ' has used and continues to use. The breeder states that ROP testing was his guide to accomplishments accomplishments and he found that his production was improving year after year. This testing leaves nothing to chance as a guide, he said. In speaking of the goaf itself Ernie Ernie states it is an intelligent animal, and claims it is more valuable than a cow due to its productivity. He said the goat is easier to handle-qnd gives the same butter fat content dr lessr He said goat's milk handled properly properly tastes no different than cow's milk. Another feature which the Valhalla Meadows owner states marked some of the success is his practice of early breeding of the kids and subsequent milking. He speaks of one that kidded at the age of fifteen months and went on to develop, into a real milker with 3300 lbs. of milk production. Valhalla Meadows has operated a dairy operation for years and weekly weekly ships two tons of milk to Toronto which is mainly used for Ricotta Cheese. The breeder states Canada could have a good gdat cheese industry industry as much is now imported from Europe. He said Quebec is do- 1 ing well in this promotion. The owner states that due to his success there is a growing demand for breeding stock and has had calls from as far away as Cuba. "I like to keep track of the goats I -sell," said the breeder. Ernie states that there is a'Jiving for a couple in such an operation as his. It does take time and continuous continuous study, he said, and can be done on a small acrea'ge. Having reached his intended goal set in 1973 Ernie Konzelman intends intends to phase out the operation over the next two years and, no doubt, look for another challenge.
