Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 5. 1986-7 Representing the Downtown West Side The above represented the west side businesses who were dressed for a Hallowe'en welcome to customers to die Village on Friday. There is not a great deal to write about this week other than the joys and challenges of our departures from and arrivals into the Village from our newly acquired four-lane super highway. We are not complaining as to what or how the project is being 1 undertaken but would like to share some of the feelings we do have when trying to familiarize ourselves "with the new overland routes. In fact I have wondered if Christopher Columbus didn't have some of the same experiences when he set out from Spain for the unknown finally ending up somewhere along the eastern coast of the North American continent. It is somewhat of an exploration especially if you would arrive just before the replacement of the required required "directional signs. I have rather enjoyed the thrill of a new route to and from Orono and to anticipate when the next change will come into effect. Perhaps I could use the viewing scope as a telescope .and like ' Christopher take a sighting of where I had been, where I am and - where I might be going. There has to be a sense of con- . tentment driving through a former corn field and former meadow. It takes the edge off a hectic day and as one meanders through the curves and over hill and dale it does have a sense of relaxation. Certainly it would not pay to get in a rush. It could get confusing at times and this certainly has happened as noted by Debbie Bourne who headed headed up a group of cars along Highway 115 in the dusk of evening to the Taunton Road intersection. You will realize that the north lane of 115 becomes a single lane which has been no wider than the ramp to Taunton road. All the cars followed Debbie as she proceeded to the Taunton Road ' * soon found that they had been l y playing follow-the-leader. '"Leaving the Village early Sunday morning' a half-ton truck was axle deep in mud on the partially completed north lane at the north entrance to the Village. We can understand how this could happen and as long as we were not the driver get a chuckle out of the incident. incident. No doubt it wont be long before we can leave dur exploring instincts to only memories of the day the province completed the four-lane highway past our door. In speaking of our early Sunday morning trip out of Orono the destination was that of the Leslie Street Spit at the lakefront in Metro Toronto. It-was our first visit to the Spit which has been built up over the past fifteen years through the dumping dumping of solid fill and scfap into the lake at the foot of Leslie Street, Today the Spit reaches some four miles in a crescent into the lake and to this point has been left to nature to cover with vegetation and some shrub and tree cover. It has become a good birding area and this was evident on Sunday with the number of birdwatchers legging it along to the end of:the spit. * S • There was a number of ducks to view and a short-eared owl was pointed out to us in the distance. Sparrow hawks were quite prevalent and we were told that the previous Sunday sightings had been made of seven Saw Whet owls. Neither Bill or I have either of the owls on our list". One of the outstanding features of f the spit is a somewhat spectacular spectacular view of the city from out in the lake. At one point on Sunday the sun beamed out from above the clouds to strike the tops of the many skyscrapfers producing a impressive impressive picture devised by both man and nature. It was a picture one would seldom see but quite moving. Both Bill and I were somewhat taken with the spit where now they are developing a number of lagoons and where we found those walking and bicycling quite friendly and ready to pass a few comments in conversation. Babes In Bookland By Dorothy Robinson The Baby Board Series It's so much fun when a book really clicks with a child. Such is my experience with an inexpensive little board book called, "My Body". It stars.an appealing, chubby, blond, blue-eyed charmer. Each page zeroes in on a different body part. (No, it isn't that explicit, although there is a down-to-earth view of a bare behind.). When I share the pictures with 18 month old Curtis, he responds with amusement. On the cover, baby tweaks the lobe of. his ear; Curtis touches his own ear and giggles- and so on with hair, eyes, toes, nose, hands, knees, tummy, back, bottom and tongue. This book elicits participation and many a chortle of glee. There are three other titles in this series: My Clothes, Daytime and Two. The Apple Blossom Shop has a good supply of the title "My Body". Christmas Showcase On November 14, 15, and 16 at the Orono Town Hall you'll have an opportunity to view the complete range of books from "Baltes in Bookland',', There are some Christmas titles and some tiny volumes suitable as stocking stuffers. Make a purchase and you'll have a chance in the draw for a book. Christmas Bazaar and English Tea "Babes in Bookland" will also have a display at the Solina Community Community Hall on November 22nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Board of Ed. presents brief to task force Spotlight on skating Orono Club By Marilyn Ransberry From time to time you may need some information regarding club policy, test days, coming events, ice , schedules etc..
