By Keith Small Letter to the Editor RE: Eldorado - Nuclear Waste Dear Mr. Herrema: I was delighted to learn that the Regional sub-committee established this fall to address concern for a nuclear waste dump proposed in this area has decided to continue its work. Indeed, such a dump will not be located at Starkville or Tyrone, but we still have the erosion and leakage problem at Port Granby. I also suspect that the issue of a site in this area has not necessarily been laid to rest. The newly-formed federal Task Force, whose members and terms of reference will be announced in early December, is to develop the site selection process. The site selection itself will follow -1 estimate at least a two-year delay in the decommissioning decommissioning of Port Granby - more seeping, leaking and eroding of radioactive waste and toxic waste into Lake Ontario. Furthermore, the Task Force will not be addressing some very perti- ■ nent questions (ie. the actual regulation regulation of our nuclear industry; particularly particularly the monitoring and enforcement enforcement of regulations established established by the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) in respect to the operation of Eldorado Resources Ltd.) As a member of the Town of Newcastle Citizens for a Safe Environment, Environment, and having met Dr. McTaggart-Cowan, I am hopeful that the establishment of the Task Force will begin the process of truly addressing the issue of the disposal of nuclear waste. It does make me wonder - if nuclear waste is such a dilemma, is nuclear energy viable?
