Happy 25th Mom and Dad Needs a watery runway A couple of weeks ago Marvin Lunn phoned the office with an interesting interesting story which, we must say, had a happy ending. In relating the story Marvin told of finding an immature loon in the back playing field at the Orono Public School. Apparently the young loon in migration must have become tired and landed in the shallow skiff of water covering a portion of the playing field. There it rested but appeared to have no inclination to take off to further its journey south to what was to be a warmer climate with the rest of its friends. Marvin became concerned and considered something must be wrong with the young bird and after some effort was able to catch the bird and take it home. It soon became apparent to the Good Samaritan that home was not the place for this bird which he said had a peak that could drive three inch nails into any two by four. Marvin said his concern was related to the health of the bird and that likely it needed more than he could do to refurbish its strength fdr the journey it should be taking. The bird was then transported over to the Bowmanville Veterinary Clinic in the east end of Bowmanville Bowmanville where he said t,he Clinic x-rayed the physical being of the loon determining that nothing was wrong. He ' said the bird was also feed ^vitamins at the Clinic to restore any loss of strength. "The Bowmanville Clinic has gone out its way to help the bird"., he said. Apparently it was at this point that the'loon's benefactor, after telling the stony to an acquaintance, was told that loons cannot take-off into flight from the ground. They have to take flight from water. Marvin was sure eager to give his new found information a try and asked if 1 would go with-him, pick up the loon and take it down to the lake to see if this was in fact the problem. "First 1 will call the vets to make sure the loon is still at the Clinic", he said. Within a few minutes Marvin returned his call saying everything had been looked after. The vets at the Bowmanville ' Clinic had taken the loon down to . the river and from here the young bird had taken off into flight last s@en heading to Kingston, It fs a fact that loons cannot tàke off into flight' off solid ground and their take-off runway must be a body of water. Loons have difficulty difficulty even walking on land with their legs attached well back on the body of the biTd. Another lesson learned about nature. Marvin continually about this time of year reports the return of a Pileated Woodpecker, the largest of the woodpecker species,, which ', winters in fhe vieinity*of his home. The report, is valid again this year. Harness rezoning Report compiled The general purpose committee of the Town of Newcastle has referred referred to staff a rezoning application by Claude Harness back to staff for a report and the calling of a public meeting concerning the application. The application has been circulated circulated to all agencies with the planning planning department awaiting replies. Claude Harness, lot 5, concession 2, seek to have rezoned a portion of a hundred parcel of land to recpgnize the existing waste oil transfer station on private services. 44 Thank You!" Debbie and Florence of Imperial Pizza would like to extend a "Thank- You" to the people in Orono and area for their support and patronage over the year. A special "Thank-You" to John Hache, 'Darlene Hardy, Marsha Blaschke and Mark Satgent. Groups awaiting Task Force appointments and references Interest remains both on the political scene and for individuals and groups who object to any proposal proposal that may find low-level radioactive waste being considered for the area from the Port Hope Eldorado operation. The interest and concern also continues over waste buried at Port Granby and at the Welcome sites, two sites which are to be decommissioned. The Region of Durham has reactivated reactivated its special committee set- forth when Eldorado had proposed that Tyrone could be a site for a permanent waste disposal. The committee will maintain interest interest in the Task Force being setup as to its membership and its terms of reference. It is also concerned over the removal of radio-active waste in Port Granby. Local politicians, individuals and groups were present at a recent meeting when Dr. Jim McTaggart- Cowan, chairman of the new Task Force, outlined some news as to the make-up of the task force and its terms of reference. Local politicians and groups have had input as to membership of the Orono Weekly Task Force and the terms of reference upder which the force will operate. Word is expected sometime in early December as to the membership membership of the force and as to its terms of reference. The Task Force is to develop a Times, Wednesday, November 19, 1986-3 selection process as to a site for low- Jevel radioactive waste and a process process that will make it economically feasible for a host municipality to accept. The next move is the formation of the Task Force with its terms of reference.
