' i ■ > , 4-Oroiio Weçklÿ Times, Wednesday, November 26, 1986 M&A OMHA Peewees weekly news report Orono 3 - Oshawa Black Hawks 3 On November 16th the Matthews and Associates OMHA peewees travelled to Oshawa for an exhibition exhibition game against the Black Hawks. This was a rematch of a league game played two weeks ago when Orono came up with a 5-3 win. Orono struck early in the first period with Tyler Gibson sliding in a low backhand drive after Scott McAllister fed him a nice pass from the corner. The second period was scoreless with both teams really checking. Orono again opened up the third . period to go ahead 2-0 when Dave Sheridan slipped one in after great pressure around the Oshawa goal. Tyler Gibson and Scott McAllister (2nd assist) did the spade work to pick up the assists. Not to be denied the Hawks fought back with two quick unanswered goals midway through the period to tie the match at two apiece. Just seconds later David Sheridan notched his second goal of the game to put his team ahead 3-2, Tyler Gibson picked up his second point when he set David up. Then came the heartbreaker, with just one second remaining Oshawa- slipped it behind Shawn Hardy to tie the match at three apiece. A well played game with each team drawing 8 penalties apiece. Special mention should be made to goalie Shawn Hardy, who played a solid game as did the Oshawa goalies. The defensive group of Bradley. Minnis, Jason Major, Brad Minnis, Jim Partner and Craig Nemis kept Oshawa shots down to a minimum. Orono Peewees clobber Port Perry 8-3 Orono 8 - Port Perry 3 On Monday, November 17th Port Perry showed up at Orono Arena for their defeat. Orono's Jeff Hart wig was the star with a hat trick. Brad Moase from Port Perry scored two out of (he three goals for Port Perry. It looked bad for Port Perry when Otono led by five goals. Port Perry hit the board with two fast goals in the second period. The first goal was scored by Scott McAllister and Jeff Hartwig added three goals to make the score 4-0., David 'Sheridan notched the 5th goal while the 6th and 7th goals of , the game went to Brad Moase of Port Perry. Orono retaliated on goals from Andy Taylor, Cameron Ester and Tyler. Gibson. The final goal in a last ditch effort was by Scott Menzies of Port Perry. Millbrook 2 - Orono 1 On Thursday, November 20th Orono Matthews and Hill went to Millbrook for a tough loss. The first period was scoreless while the action started in the second period when Millbrook scored -half way through the period on a goal from Jeff Cillis. Orono scored in the beginning of the third period with Jeff Hartwig tying it all up. Millbrook came back and slammed one past Shawn Hardy Hardy by Jaret Anderson to win the game. Orono's defeat could have been prevented by less penalties. Bewdley Tournament Game 1 - Orono 4 - Colborne 2 David Sheridan scored the first goal at the 46 second mark of the first period tin a breakaway to the top corner and assisted by Jason Major. Cameron Esler dominated the second period with two goals and Dustin Reid assisting him on both. Colborne tried to come back with a goal by Nica Clkrey and in the third Shane Weatherry of Colborne Colborne added one making the score 3-2. With two minutes remaining in the last period Jeff Hartwig slapped one in to make the score 4-2. Shawn Hardy, Orono goalie, kept Colborne out of reach of scoring scoring any more goals in the game. Shawn won the Most Valuable Player Award for his efforts. Orono then advanced into A Division. Division. Game 2 - Warkworth 3 - Orono T ' Warkworth came out strong with goals from Lant Beaver, Dan Findlay and Garreth Evans. Orono finally came on the hpard in the third period when Jim Partner scored at 3:28. Orono didn't seem to have jhe get up and go as of the first game. This ended their chances for a division title. Jason Major was most valuable player for the second game by showing he wasn't ready to give up yet. Both games showed a tot of fun had by all. Orono 3 - Oshawa 5 On Saturday, November 22nd Orono hosted an exhibition game with the Glen Stewart Park Novice team from Oshawa. The Juicers came out flying high and at 3:17 of the first Jonathan Noble opened the scoring on a pass from Owen Taylor but this lead was short-lived as Oshawa tied it up at. 2:10. Tomas Wakefield scored on a breakaway at 1:39 putting us ahead once more. With just 17 seconds left in the period Jonathan Noble got his second of the game on a set up from Brian Hogenhout. Oshawa tied it up in the second when we allowed them two unanswered goals. At 4:29 of the third the 23/86. Whenever OronP and Millbrook get together for a g arne y° u arc cer " tain to see two teams going all out, each trying to gain the victory. The game started out with both teams doing a lot of passing and trying to set up plays, but the goaltenders did their jobs well also resulting in a scoreless first period. At 6:32 of the second the Millbrook team elated their fans opened the scoring of the game. The Juicers did not let the opposition keep the lead very long, Marc David tied it up on a pass from Bryan and Amanda Haines at the 5:04 mark. Orono got a break at 2:32 of the ' third when the Millbrook goalie misread the play and gave Bryan Haines the opportunity opportunity he needed to put us in the lead assisted by Ryan Winning and Wade Peacock. Millbrook pulled their goaltender in favour of the extra extra man. They managed to keep us, pretty much hemmed into our own end but our goalie Steven Sargent thwarted their scoring attempts helping the team to hold onto their lead. After the final buzzer numerous sighs of relief could be heard from the Orono cheering section. section. On loan to us for this game was Scott McDonald from the tyke team. Scott sure knows how to handle handle the puck in the opposition's end, tie came awfully close to a couple couple of goals. Helping the team earn their victory was - Brian Hogenhout, Owen Taylor, Tomas Wakefield, David Swan, Danny Buttigieg and Jeff Gates. Tomas was really left wondering, just how are you supposed to get the puck in the net. He had three excellent op- portunties which looked like sure counters, but somehow the Millbrook goalie managed to stop them. Maybe next time Tomas. WANT ADS 983-5301 Orono OMHA Tennant Fuel Atoms news reports The Orono O.M.H.A. Tennant Fuels Atoms started the 1986-87 hockey season with a very busy weekend. On Friday October 24 they travelled to Port Perry where they played a very even match. , Port Perry went ahead early 1-0 after only 32 seconds played. But before the end of the period Orono tied the score when Aaron Staples fired home a pass ■ from Stephen Stadleman. The Orono goaltender Chad Maartense was called on to make many fine saves to keep the score tied until halfway though the final period when Port Perry broke out with three quick unanswered goals. This pût the game out of reach. The following day the Orono Atoms faced off against the Bowman ville Toro Atom "B" team at Darlington Arena. This time the Orono squad jumped out to an early early lead when Chris Yeo took a pass from TreVor Lomax and fired it home with only one minute played.
