Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 10, 1986 Separate School Board lifts rental proposal The Peterborough-Victoria- Northumberland and Newcastle Separate School Board of Education Education has closed out its bid to rent space in either the Cobourg or Bowmanville High School. The Separate School Board in October had requested consideration of the public board renting eight classrooms in both the Cobourg and Bowmanville schools for the purpose of setting up Separate High Schools in the two communities. Last week representatives of the two boards met for a second time when a staff report was presented to the joint meeting from the public school board. It was reported that the Cobourg and* Bowmanville High Schools were virtually filled to capacity. Upon hearing the report the Separate School withdrew its re quest for rental space. The Separator School Board will re-open St. Joseph's School in Cobourg to house four elementary separate school classes. This will open up space in the St. Mary's school for the addition of Grade 12 and an estimated 60 Grade 9 students expected in September of 1987. St. Joseph's School has been used used jointly as a learning resource " centre. The two boards will now seek to re-locate the centre elsewhere in either Cobourg or Port Hope. The Separate School Board now has an enrolment of some 80 students at their Cobourg High School at St. Mary's. It was pointed out at the joint meeting that space could be available at the Port Hope High School but Peter Roach, Separate School Administrator, stated the school was not conveniently located for the Separate School Board's purposes. Roach also said the board had no intention at this time to build a school in Cobourg and may never do so. The joint committees are to meet again in the new year when they will address two other matters of joint interest. • The first matter pertains to a procedure procedure for giving high school guidance counsellors from one school system access to Grade 8 students of the other system.' Transportation co-ordination between the two boards is another topic to be considered by the qorrr- mittee. The committee is to issue a progress progress report before the end of 1987 to the provincial Planning and Implementation Implementation Commission. Th.e Commission was established to oversee the changes brought about by the extension of full funding for Separate School Boards in Ontario. Happenings . .
