To plan for drop in employment after Darlington Municipal and Ontario Hydro officials officials are to meet January 23 to dicuss ways in which to lessen the impact of a decreasing workforce at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. The station last July employed some 7,060 workers which number has now decreased to 6,600. The figure of 6,600 is expected to be maintained throughout 1987 but that the number of construction- related jobs will decrease while operational staff will increase. At the present time operational staff has reached 580 employees. When the plant is operational operational employees will have reached a total of 850. Councillor Hubbard, chairman of planning for the Town' has said the Town has been encouraging residential development and that it was now time to be looking for more industrial growth both in the Town and in the Region. Susanne Stickley, community relations officer for Ontario Hydro, ' stated that it is a good time for the Town and Region to be considering an economic strategy for the days after construction at Darlington. In 1986 Ontario Hydro has paid the Town an amount of $371,000 in grants in lieu of taxes and a further $325,000 has been allotted from the Station B Impact fund for various , projects throughout the Town. Of the total construction workers at Darlington 1000 have moved to Oshawa with 590 taking up residence in Newcastle and 170 in Whitby. Other areas in the district have been affected to a lesser degree. Twice as many employees rent accommodation accommodation in the area rather Oshawa supports Region recycling Oshawa like the Town of Newcastle has come out in support for a Regidn of Durham recycling proposal. Whitby still remains the only municipality in support of î private contractor. f/f "'May yourjoys be many, j as are our thanks to you. is Not Just Fashions ; U' ; Sylvia Parker ---- Mon.-Tues. d.30- 7.00 --" .
