From the carlinian woodlands that are scattered along north shore of Lake Erie to the pine-rimmed lakes of the Canadian Shield, one encounters a range of plant and animal species. Some, such as the Tulip-tree and Small White Ladies-slipper of' Carolinian Canada have a very limited range in Ontario. Others, such as the Scarlet Tanager and White Pine occur throughout the southern section of the province. The FON Membership Trips Programme Programme is a series of one day and weekend trips that introduces interested interested naturalists to the finest natural areas southern Ontario has to offer. A year for naturalists can be broken into several distinctive units. The winter months of January and February are the time to enjoy a landscape wrapped in a blanket of snow. It is also the time to discover the tracks of mammals in the snow - mammals that are seldom observed. Winter hireling can present many surprises, with special thrills for those discovering birds that should have left the area. Some of our summer birds do overwinter overwinter if they can find enough food. Winter is also the time lo 'Search for Eagles' along the edge of the Canadian Shield, for eagles concentrate concentrate in several areas where food is plentiful. The lengthening days of March bring warmer weather and the return of the early migrants. Naturalists planning trips in the early early March-to-May period concentrate concentrate on visiting the key migration concentration points-Long Point, Rondeau Provincial Park, Poipt Pelee National Park, and Pelee Island (all on Lake Erie), and Presqu'île Presqu'île Provincial Park (on Lake Ontario). Ontario). Special attention is paid to places such as Beamer's Point, near Grimsby, where the northward parade of hawks and eagles bring ' vast numbers on peak-weather ■ days. April also is the time of the year to venture out at night, to listen to the mating calls of frogs, toads and owls. It's also the time to venture northward to watch the spring spring breakup in the shield country of Algonquin Park.
