Big bust for Durham Region A Combined force of 130 police officers charged 84 people with trafficking, the largest bust of its kind in the region's history. It was felt by the Durham Regional Police that the drug situation situation on the streets had reached a crisis point. The operation started ' last summer when OPP undercover officers whose faces were unknown in the drug community began hanging hanging around different bars in the region. Over the six months $21,000 worth of drugs were bought by the undercover officers. The police identified 13 of the spots and carefully pointed out that the establishments and the owners were in no* way connected to the drug transactions, although some ■ of those charged were employees. Most of the charges were laid last Wednesday but police seized 10 pounds of "magic mushrooms" from a Bowmanville truck stop the day before. Undercover officers had offered $16,000 to buy the mushrooms, which contain a hallucinogenic drug similar to LSD. Police said the bags of mushrooms would have A street value of $45,000. Police also said about one- third of the $150,000 worth of drugs involved was cocaine. In "addition to the 130 drug charges, there were 150 criminal code charges laid, including fraud, break-and-enter and possession of stolen property.
