'Violence in Media' PD day topic Speaking to* primary teachers and administrative staff of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, Maude Barlow, said, we are a society that doesn't like its kids very much. She was speaking on the topic of "Violence in the Media" at a Professional Development Development Day recently. Barlow was at one time an adviser adviser on women's issue to former prime minister Pierre Trudeau and was involved in founding the Canadian Canadian Coalition Against Media Pornography. Pornography. She said current concerns and problems encountered with students by teachers involve rape, robbery, assault, suicide, abortion and bom bing. She said in 1V4U me issues involved involved running in the halls and chewing gum. < Barlow spoke of the increase of violence in the media and the image portrayed of women. Using the U.S. National Coalition Coalition Against Violence in Television statistics she said every five minutes there is an act of violence, every eight minutes an assault and every two. and a half hours there is a murder shown on television. The speaker said children spend twice as much time before television than they spend in school and by the time they are 18 they will have seen 28,000 violent deaths.. She also said sexual violence doubles every year and that pornography pornography has developed into a $50 billion industry. If we have free trade with the U.S. pornography will increase stating that in the U.S. there are 50,000 pornography titles in print. The speaker then presented a 30-minute video which was viewed by the 300 in attendance. It has been reported that after 15 minutes of the video showing' people people felt uneasy and began to leave. Here Barlow said everything shown had been passed by the censors and was particularly ■ popular with the kids. Barlow said, "You haven't seen anything yet, this is mainstream," The video showing was cut short and Barlow commented that when it started the imagery was soft. She said the audience had become tense as the video continued and if they had seen the video to the end the local audience would have been numb. Barlow stated that the women's teachers' federation and the separate schools were taking a strong stand against violence in the media. She suggested that when a televi sion program is seen as violent or pornographic the viewer should phone or write the television station. station. She said one call to the CBC is equal to 300 who have the same opinion. opinion. "Don't blame the kids", she. said, "they didn't make the films." Barlow said such violence must be dealth with in the classroom through a form of media literacy and she further suggested that teachers' get more involved in making making statements and writing to their members of parliament. "We have set a time bomb," she said. 40 TEMEPERANGE CTP.EET BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO 1987 The Corporation of the TOWN OF NEWCASTLE INTERIM TAX BILLS The 1987 Interim Tax'Bills have now been mailed to all ratepayers and are payable as follows: REALTY AND BUSINESS TAX 1st Installment PAYABLE March 9,1987 2nd Installment PAYABLE April 30, 1987 Pay Promptly to Avoid Penalty If you have not received your Interim Tax Bill, please telephone the Municipal Tax Offibe at 623-3379. 1987 Taxes are PAYABLE ONLY at the locations detailed on thé Tax Bill.
