4-Orono' Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 8, 1987 Roughley Novice lose out to Baltimore entry The Orono OMHA Novices closed closed out an otherwise Successful season on March 25, 1987 with a very bitter and disappointing defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Novices. The loss came thé result of a goal by Baltimore's Chris MacLeod at the 1:34 mark in the third overtime period. In regulation play Jeff Hughes had given Orono a 1-0 lead early in the second period from Jamie Shetler. Before the period was over however MacLeod tied it up for Baltimore. In the third Orono missed missed many golden opportunities to score but just couldn't put the puck in the net which set the stage for sudden death overtime. In the overtime Orono seemed to fade under constant Baltimore pressure with Clayton Rendell making making some spectacular saves to keep us in the game. Finally Baltimore's hard work paid off as they scored the winner and took home a beautiful trophy donated by Cowan Pontiac Buick of Bowmanville. The'previous night in Baltimore on March 24th the home team had beaten us 3-2. It was a must win for them as we had won the first game of this best of 3 series on March 21st 2-0. In the game on March 24 Baltimore opened up a 2-0 lead but Orono fought back in the third period to tie it with goals by Jeff Hughes and Drew Hansen. Jamie Shetler assisted on both goals with help from Drew Hansen on Jeff's and Jeff returned the favour on Drew's goal. Then, as it has happened happened in the last three games we've played in Baltimore we got a somewhat questionable penalty as Sommer West was called for high sticking. The result was a power play goal by Baltimore for the win. As mentioned earlier the opening game of this sériés was played in Orono on March 21st with the good guys winning 2-0. All the scoring came in the first period as Jason Lawrence started things off from Sommer West and Jamie Shetler. Sommer then rounded ouf the offense offense as she scored unassisted with 51 seconds left in the first period. From then on Clayton Rendell and our defensive corps of Mark Foster ànd Scott Ransberry, plus Andrew Burton and Jeff Goodmurphy shut down the Baltimore offense. Despite, the loss we ended the season with a very respectable 30 wins, 15 losses and 10 ties in 55 games. John Brophy eat your heart out. Former principal facing theft charge Port Hope police have laid a charge of theft over $1000 against former Port Hope High school principal, Jim Williams. Police had been called in to in vestigate an accounting discrepancy at the school. Williams is expected to appear in court within a month. Gladys Brown added her musical touch, with a short piano recital and as always much appreciated. The evening closed with a tasty lunch of breads, muffins, cheeses etc. served by lunch committee, Leila Werry, Vera Staples and Helen Robinson. I. G.A. Avg. 55 108 11 1,96 Orono Horticulture holds spring meeting Excellent attendance at the first spring meeting on Thursday, March 26th of the Orono Horticulture Society. The meeting opened with the singing of 'O Canada' with Gladys Brown at the piano. Our .'brahd new president Lorna Atkins ,welcomed everyone and a special welcome to visitors from Newcastle. Newcastle. Secretary Carol Mostert gave minutes of annual meeting, and treasurer Adele McGill gave a very encouraging financial report. Two upcoming bus trips are creating much interest. Our first trip is to Toronto on Wednesday, April 8 to "Flower Festival" and "Home Show", arid second trip is Wednesday, May 7th to Niagara Falls. Yvonne Trafford and Isabelle Challice were kept busy booking for these events. - f Our attractive 1987 year books were given out to members and we, congratulate the committee on a fine job, also Jessica Mostert on a most attractive cover. Show chairman Corrie DeJong gave out helpful hints and reminds us of a new "show" in April meeting. This show will feature all houseplants, so spruce up your plants now, in preparation for showing. Our new president is giving giving prize for most points in the entire entire show. District director Challice gave us news of upcoming Dist. 17 Convention, Convention, in Nestleton Community Centre Centre on Saturday, April 11, 1987. Plan to attend this event, as good.. speakers Mr. Art Drysdale, Toronto Toronto and Mrs. Atruso Perkins, Japanese floral demonstration. * Our next executive meeting is Thursday, April 9, at the home of Mrs. Yvonne Trafford. Adele McGill introduced our guest for the evening, Mr. Lloyd Pfeffer, Natural Resources, who lives in "downtown Pontypool" and has been at our Orono station for 12 years. Our station is now shipping out approximately 7 million trees'a year. Lldyd operates . the computers on orders, invoices » etc. Six or seven ladies work in the packing sheds, bagging up the orders. Our speaker brought some excellent excellent slides of our Orono station, the many beautiful floral beds, etc. make this station one of the most attractive and we have many visitors to our station. Many weddings use • the beautiful backgrounds for their photography. A very interesting slide was of Dewey Harness and the team of horses, Priqce and Charlie, taken in 1967. Steady progress of newer, more modern equipment was shown over the years, and even have refrigerated vans to transport the trees. Following a question and answer period, Lloyd then showed a very thought-provoking film. "Crisis in the Rain" reminding us of the ever present threat of acid rain. Our beautifullakes, rivers etc. are being polluted every year and all signs of life disappear, fish, plant life. The
