Charter members and forty year members in attendance at the for- thieth anniversary of Heather Rebekah Lodge in Orono on Satur- With 500 in attendance the Durham East Liberals on Wednesday Wednesday evening of last week elected Diane Hamre of Orono as their candidate candidate for the next provincial election election expected to be held sometime this year. The meeting was held in the Blackstock Community Centre which was filled to capacity. Some three hundred and fifty card-carrying delegates made their choice between two candidates, Donna Fairey and Diane Hamre. The results of the vote was not an-. day were: (Back row) Bro. On the winning side Carole-Anne Vatc{ier, 18, a resident resident of Orono fared very well in (vocal classes at the Kiyvanis Music Festival held recently in Oshawa. Carole-Anne entered four categories' in the . music festival receiving two firsts and' two seconds. She was also 'invited to compete in the Junior Rosebowl Competition which was quite an honour. Presently, Carole-Anne is very busy attending Grade 13 at Bowmanville High School, completing completing her Grade 8 Voice and Grade 1 Theory, Grade 2 Harmony lessons. Carole-Anne plans to pursue pursue her musical career at the University of Toronto where she will study music majoring in voice. Rebekah Lodge celebrates 40th anniversary Heather Rebekah Lodge of Orono observed their fortieth anniversary anniversary on Saturday at the Oddfellow's Oddfellow's Hall with close to ninety present for the anniversary occasion. occasion. Two charter members were present present for the anniversary along with fourteen members who have served with the lodge for a full forty years. The Noble Grand, Sister Bertha White, called the evening to order which began with a banquet. Sister Olive Millson was Master of Ceremonies for the evening calling upon Rebekah Assembly officers, who were present, who brought greetings and spoke briefly reflecting reflecting the fellowship which was most evident during the course of the evening. Katherine Bridges, president of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario, said it was a wonderful evening and that it was evident that the charter members had provided leadership. She said, "I can tell you have been a busy lodge and 1 urge you to continue continue this work of love and friendship. friendship. Sister Gladys Gamsby, in speaking, speaking, likely expressed the view of all charter members when she said, "If all members obtained the happiness that I have from the lodge then it has all been worthwhile." Following the banquet, some presentations and table speeches the gathering retired to the lodge hall where they were entertained with songs by a choral group, The Country Country Chords lead by David Grey. The choral group was greatly enjoyed as were vocals by Bonnie,Cowle and her accompanist. Bob Chater presented two recitations recitations and caught the fancy of the audience with one entitled, The Outhouse. All in attendance enjoyed the fortieth fortieth anniversary occasion. The Rebekah Lodge presently has a membership of sixty-six and has tajred well over the past forty years. Downtown plans out special event promotions Hall packed for liberal event Large turnout of liberals gives edge to Hamre as their candidate The Orono Downtown Business Association held a meeting last Wednesday morning with a good Représentation ' from most businesses in the downtown area. The main purpose of the meeting was to devise promotions for the next couple of months hopefully attracting attracting attention to the 1 downtown businesses. , The group gave approval to a ' calendar, phone number, coming event mail out to be distributed within the Orono area. The mail out is also to include discount coupons for participating businesses and will be redeemable on specific dates during during the next two and a half months. A "name that baby contest" will be held early in the month of May and' will feature baby pictures of downtown store owners. A prize will be given to the one with the most correct answers. A downtown community garage sale and sidewalk sale is to be promoted promoted on May 23rd which will con- cide with the, CHQO Chili Cook- Off being held at the Orono Fair grounds. Plans are also underway fo provide hay rides from the fair grounds to the downtown area. The Orono D.B.I.A. is also to enter a Chili team in the contest at the fair grounds. Happenings . . . . Seek Grant for Elevator for Handicapped The Town of Newcastle council on Monday gave approval in principal for the Orono Arenba Board to make application to the Province Province for a grant to aid in the construction of an elevator for the use of Handicapped persons at the arena. The Town noted that the project would not have financial aid form the Town. Orono Card Party Results There were 12 tables present.
