The 25th Annual Meeting of Oshawa Presbyterial United Church Women began to blossom in colour at the moment the first brilliant entry in the banner contest was hung. Harmony Harmony UCW produced the winning banner. Flame-shaped name tags bore coloured ribbons to identify "charter members", "past- Presbyterial Executive members" and "past Presbyterial Presidents". The flame motif was repeated when Donna Johnston pinned paper flames on a' map of Oshawa Presbytery to locate geographically the glow of the 37 UCW units which answered Diane McKinzey's roll call. - k A ceremony of celebration of women, especially honouring Charter Members, Past Presbyterial Executive Members ' and Past Presbyterial Presidents, was conducted conducted by Jacquelin Guthrie. Charter Members and 'Past Presbyterial Executive Members were called to be recognized. The . Past Presidents of Oshawa Presbyterial Executive were called forward and were presented with a rose. Olive Bell cut the big birthday birthday cake which was decorated with the 2'th Anniversary lamp logo, and "Happy Birthday" was sung by the 200 women assembled. Jacquelin Jacquelin Guthrie read a poem, "Rainbows "Rainbows of Tomorrow", and the hymn "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee' , was sung. The guest speaker, Mary Kellogg, Welcome, Ontario, President elect of Bay of Quinte Conference, United Church of Canada, was introduced introduced and thanked by Margaret Tansley, Columbus. Speaking on "The Celebration of Our Gifts and Rededication of Them", Mary sent the audience into buzz groups to assist jin the personal research necessary to appreciate the gifts each one has to offer and dedicate and to recognize gifts in others. Greetings were brought to the meeting by the Rev. John May, minister of Harmony Street United Church. In keeping with the historical occasion, the Rev. May paid tribute to the early women's group, the "Willing Workers", who used to meet in the Harmony Schoolhouse south of King Street where they initiated the idea of the present church; then laboured for its completioi/thirtyTive years ago. The greeting? of Conference UCW President, Marion Minnifie, were vivaciously delivered on behalf of Conference by Olive Bell, Whitby. Reports given during the business session were Finance and Budget by Anne Tane, Literature by Audrey Martin, Stewardship by Jean LeGrand, Social Issues by Shelley Wright, World Outreach by Margaret Elliott. Mr. Wayne Oake, co-ordinator of the South Oshawa Community Development Project, described the activities and the school. Admission is $2.00 for adults $1.00 for senior citizens and children. They have also been busy lately entering the Kiwanis Music Festival in Oshawa where they placed placed second in their class. Our Junior team of Capt. Kelly Couch, Co-Captain Jackie Cowan, Tonya Bunton and Lisa Jackson, placed fifth in their section, a position position they can feel prqud of as they were the only Guide team competing competing against Pathfinder teams several years older than themselves. A special thanks goes to Lisa Jackson who at the last minute- stood in for team member Jennifer Ryckman. Unfortunately a week before the competition Jennifer came down with a bout of chicken pox. The Senior team Pamela Werry, Bonnie Jackson, Rose Sailer and Pam Allin placèd second in their section, t he competition consisted consisted of two emergency problems and in each problem there were two - x casualties. Injuries included broken v bones, burns, choking, severe bleeding and " a protruding object from the eye and a time limit of 20 minutes was given to treat each problem. problem. The Guides and their Leaders felt the competition gave them an excellent excellent insight into how they could handle an emergency situation and appreciate the time and training , given them by their St. John's Ambulance Ambulance instructor Doug Ryckman. The day ended with a stop at the Dairy Queen where team members celebrated with a sundae and made a pact they would be competing again next year.
