4-Orono, Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 20, 1987 Fast Ball back in Orono every Tuesday evening By Snuffy Hunt Well, folks, its that time of year when you dust off the cleats and take the cobwebs out of the old ball glove, don the cap and squeeze on some A-5-3-5. Fastball is back in Orono for another season. Every Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m., the Pagans will contest a game with one of six teams out of the Oshawa City & District Fastball League. This is our second year playing out of Orono, and is the only only Fastball team left playing in Durham Region east of Oshawa since Bowmanville unfortunately folded last year. , - Since this is my first write-up of the season, I would like to mention all sponsors involved in making this team possible; Pisani Construction - Orono; Jade Gardens - Orono; Norm's Deli - Bowmanville; Gary Mitchell Construction - Janetville; Pontypool Pizza - Pontypool; Nesbitt, Tompson, Bongard - Oshawa; Hunt's Photo Studio - Pontypool. So folks, I won't bore you with any more preliminaries - just to say that this is my first column and will hopefully be weekly. Now down to Fastball. Home opener: May 12/87. Orono Park. Two rival teams, Orono Pineridge Pagans vs. Pontypool. Pontypool. There is no love lost between between the two teams. Pontypool's record against the Pagans last year was three wins - no losses! The pitching pitching match-ups were Gerry Loucks ' for the Pagans and Brent Fallis for Pontypool. Pontypool took the lead in the first with Norm Caruana tying the game in the third with an enormous Home run to deep centre field. • The middle innings saw the Pagans go in front 3 -1 only to have Mark Charland of Pontypool tie the game on a squibler to centre field. Pineridge then brought in their ace reliever, Andy Sutch, in the 5th, only to have Pontypool go in front 4 -3 in the 6th inning on some past balls. Now we go to the 7th inning with two out, nobody on, Mr. Opportunity, Opportunity, Norm Caruana splits the Short Stop's legs for a single - no, wait - he stretches it to à double with a beauty slide Into 2nd. Up steps first baseman Steve Dixon and smacks a solid single to right field. Tie game 4 - 4. Extra innings. Pontypool changes pitchers; Don Timms comes in, another lefty. Nothing develops in the 8th, or top of the %h inning. Bottom of the ninth, 2 out, nobody on, Randy Wood at the plate, notorious for smashing the long ball or striking out, the count 2 & 2, the pitch, Smash - its going - its going - its gohe - the ball game is over! An opposite opposite field home run! Ah, the thrill of victory. Each week I'm going to pick three stars off the Pineridge Pagans ball club. 1st Star - Randy Wood, Game winning home run. 2nd Star - Norm, Caruana, who tied the game twice with a home run and a double. •" 3rd Star - Steve Dixon with a 2 for 4 performance and drove in the tying run to put the game into extra innings. Honourable mentions go to both pitchers of the Pagans for a job well done. Calls for review of Nuclear plant systems The Atomic energy Control Board has recommended a review of the energency shutdown systems at Ontario Hydro's four Pickering A nulcear reactors. AEÇB is concerned that the systems at the generating station might not be adequate to effectively control the type of accident that blew apart the Chernobyl reactor in the Soviet Urkraine. It is noted that the Pickering A station is different to the Pickering B station and the A units would not meet board requirements that reactors reactors operate with two independent shutdown systems.
